“To Make the Best Better” is the motto for 4-H across the nation and 4-H in Brookings County is no different. Brookings County 4-H offers programming for youth ages 5-18. Youth ages 5 – 7 are welcome to participate in Cloverbud activities; providing a sneak peek to the traditional 4-H program though hands-on activities and lessons highlighting 4-H project areas. The traditional 4-H program is for youth ages 8 (by January 1 of the current year) to 18. There are nine 4-H clubs located throughout the county, each offering unique opportunities, activities and experiences, as well as special interest clubs including 4-H Shooting Sports and Dog.
The 4-H calendar runs from October 1 – September 30 of each year. Enrollment can be completed online at the iGrow website. Monthly activities are highlighted in our ‘Brookings County 4-H Times’ newsletter. Culminating events take place in June, July and August which showcase the achievements of 4-H members through their participation in the Horse Show, Dog Show, Achievement Days and several Youth in Action contests.
The county office is located in Brookings, adjacent to the Swiftel Center, at 826 32nd Avenue. 4-H programming in Brookings County is a part of South Dakota State University and SDSU Extension.
