Injury accident

Driver 1: Juan Carlos Apolinar Age: 26

Vehicle 1: 2003 Ford Focus Damage: Total loss

Driver 2: Andrew Stevens Age: 28

Vehicle 2: 2000 Mercury Sable Damage: Total loss

On the above date and time the Elkton Fire Dept., Elkton Ambulance, Brookings Ambulance, and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two vehicle injury accident where a bull was struck in the roadway. It was found that Andrew Stevens was traveling eastbound and had struck the bull that was in the roadway at the above location. Juan Apolinar was traveling westbound and struck the bull that was laying in the roadway, causing his vehicle to roll. Juan was transported by ambulance to the Brookings Hospital with unknown injuries. Juan was issued citations for driving with a suspended driver’s license, and no insurance. Andrew was issued a citation for no insurance. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Vandalism

Location: 3200 blk. of Western Ave. S. (Rural Brookings, SD)

On the above date and time a rural Brookings resident reported two tires that were slashed on their 2001 Acura passenger car. The vehicle was sitting in their driveway at the time of the vandalism. It happened sometime between the hours of midnight on Monday, 09/18/17 to when it was noticed at 0430. The cost to replace the tires is estimated at $180.00. Theft

Location: 100 blk of W. 4th St. (White, SD)

On the above date and time a White Resident reported the theft of a Ruger SR22 .22 cal. pistol that is black with a stainless steel slide. The pistol went missing between the months of May or June. The owner thought he might have misplaced it and has been looking for it but is unable to find it. He now believes it was stolen from his vehicle that was parked at his residence. Construction Accident

Reported: Monday, 09/11/17 @ 1008
Location: Rural Elkton (Near 210th St. & 484th Ave.)

On the above date and time Brookings Ambulance, Elkton First Responder’s, Elkton Ambulance, and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to an accident at a construction site of a new cattle barn. Three construction workers fell off of scaffolding that broke. The scaffolding was attached to a skid steer. 53 year old Antonio Vizcarra (Madison, SD), 51 year old Noe Torres (Madison, SD), 22 year old Isai Vizcarra (Madison, SD) were injured after they had fell about 12 feet onto the concrete floor. They were transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Brookings Ambulance. 22 year old Isai Vizcarra was then transferred to Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls to be treated for unknown injuries. The other two were treated and released from the Brookings Hospital.

Hit and Run Accident

Location: Brookings, or White, SD

On the above date and time a resident from the City of White reported that a vehicle struck the passenger side of his 2016 Ford F150, causing some $1,975.00 worth of damage. The owner of the vehicle advised that it happened sometime between Saturday, 09/02/17 to when it was noticed on Friday, 09/08/17. The owner is unsure of the exact location as he didn’t noticed the damage for some time, but it is believed to have happened either in Brookings, or White SD. Theft from construction site

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of electrical cords that were stolen from 3 excavators, and a crushing machine from a construction site that is near the above location. The theft occurred sometime between Thursday, 08/31/17 to when it was noticed on the morning of Friday, 09/08/17. The cost to fix and replace the cords is unknown at this time. On the above date and time a Bruce resident reported that someone had broken the antenna off of their DISH Network Satellite dish. The owner believed that it occurred around 0300 as a large group of people on a party bus came through the area that they live in. The amount of damage is unknown at this time. Hit and Run

Reported: Saturday, 09/02/17 @ 1115
Location: 198th St. and 487th Ave.

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office was called to the above location for a yield sign that was struck by a motor vehicle. The vehicle was traveling westbound on 198th St. and went off the roadway and struck the sign. The incident occurred sometime after 2100 hours as a white truck and a small tan car with damage to the frame was seen in the area. The witness could not give a make, model, or license plate number of the vehicles. The cost to repair the sign is unknown at this time. Natural Gas Leak

Location: 100 Blk of Kennedy in Aurora, SD

On the above date and time the Aurora Fire Dept., Brookings Ambulance, Northwestern Energy, Brookings County Emergency Management and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to the above location for a natural gas line that had been hit. A local electric construction company hit the line while digging in the area. Several homes in the area of Rasmussen St., Kennedy, Drive, and Truman Drive were evacuated as a precautionary measure. Northwestern Energy was able to contain the leak and residents were allowed back into their homes approximately two hours after being evacuated. No injuries were reported.

Intentional Damage to Property

Location: 500 Blk of Lovejoy Lane (Aurora, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report from an Aurora resident about an arrow being shot into their vehicles driver’s side door. The 1997 Jeep Cherokee was parked on the street in front of their residence. The incident is believed to have occurred sometime between Wednesday, 08/23/17 at 1800 to Wednesday, 08/23/17 at 2000 when a neighbor saw the arrow in the vehicle. The damage is estimated at $1,200.00. Vehicle Fire

Location: ¼ south of 201st St. on 456th Ave. (Rural Arlington)

On the above date and time Arlington Fire Dept., Arlington Ambulance, South Dakota Hwy Patrol, & the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a vehicle that was on fire at the above location. It was found that the driver of the vehicle had become stuck when turning around and the vehicle stalled. The driver attempted to restart the vehicle and the vehicle caught fire in the engine compartment. The 1994 Chevy S10 pickup was a total loss and no one was injured.

On the above date and time Bruce First Responders, Brookings Ambulance, and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to an injury accident at the above location. It was found that Jason Marlette was traveling westbound on 203rd St. about 1/4 east of 463rd Ave. when a deer came out of the ditch. The ATV struck the deer and the vehicle went into the south ditch where it rolled. The ATV received minor damage. The driver Jason Marlette was transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Brookings Ambulance with unknown injuries. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Theft of Prescription Narcotics

Reported: Thursday, 08/17/17 @ 1030
Location: Rural Arlington, SD

On the above date and time a rural Arlington resident reported the theft of prescription pain medication from their residence. The victim advised that on Wednesday, 08/16/16 at 1830 an African American Male was at his residence peddling cleaning products and was in their home. The victim advised that the medicine was sitting on the table and this morning it was found missing. The company the subject was with was identified as Platinum Plus LLC. The Sheriff’s Office checked to see if County had authorized any peddler’s licenses, which they had not issued any licenses. The Sheriff’s Office has been unable to locate anyone peddling in the area. On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of the theft of an undisclosed amount of cash and personal checks from a Volga resident. The money and checks was taken from an unlocked safe at the residence sometime between Friday, 07/07/17 to when it was noticed missing on Monday, 08/14/17. The owner of the home advised that the home is locked in the evening and when they are not there. There was no sign of forced entry into the home. On the above date and time Volga First Responders, Brookings Ambulance, and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two vehicle injury accident at the above location. It was found that Tanner Wulf was traveling southbound on 465th Ave. in his 2003 Chevy Cavalier and failed to stop for the stop sign at that location. His vehicle then struck the 2005 Ford F150 driven by Brandon Mcrae that was traveling eastbound on 214th St. There was also a passenger Jonathon Finnegan riding in the vehicle with Brandon. All three were transported to the Brookings Hospital with unknown injuries. Tanner was issued a citation for a stop sign violation. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Theft

Location: 200 blk. of Hickory St. (Brookings, SD)

On the above date and time two residents who live in the 200 blk. of Hickory St. reported the theft of an undisclosed amount of cash and an Ipad Mini from their unlocked vehicles that were parked at their residences, one of which was inside an unlocked garage. The thefts are believed to have occurred in the early morning hours of Monday, 08/07/17 as one of the victims may have seen someone inside of the vehicle, but checked and did not see anything missing until later in the day. Pursuit

Reported: Sunday, 08/06/17 @ 0038
Location: Began Medary Ave. & 8th St. Ended: 471st Ave. & 202nd St.

On the above date and time a Deputy with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop a vehicle near Medary Ave. & 8th St. in Brookings for an equipment violation. The vehicle fled heading north on Medary Ave. running through the stop light at the Hwy 14 bypass at a high rate of speed. The vehicle continued north on 471st Ave. at speeds of up to 110 mph. The vehicle stopped on 471st Ave. and 202nd St. The driver 20 year old Julio Cesar Mercado of Brookings, SD was found to be under the influence of alcohol and narcotics. Several open containers of alcohol along with methamphetamine was found in the vehicle. He was arrested for aggravated eluding, possession of a controlled substance, ingestion of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, reckless driving, DUI 2nd, driving while revoked, speeding 26 MPH and above, underage consumption, open container in a motor vehicle, no insurance, lane driving, stop light violation, and an equipment violation. He is currently being held in custody at the Brookings County Detention Center on a $3,500.00 cash only bond.

On the above date and time a rural Brookings resident reported a glass picnic table that was laying upside down with all of the glass shattered on the back deck of the residence. The damage occurred sometime between Friday, 08/04/17 at 0730 to Friday, 08/04/17 at 1500. The damage is estimated at around $400 dollars. Hit and Run

On the above date and time the Brookings County Hwy Dept. reported damage to a culvert, reflective sign, and private fence at the above location. It appeared that the damage came from a truck with dual rear wheels that left the roadway on the east side where it entered the ditch and damaged the above listed property. The damage is estimated at $2,619.03. It is unknown when the hit and run occurred. Hit and Run

Location: State Park Boat Landing Lake Poinsett

On the above date and time a Rural Brookings resident reported a hit and run to his 2017 Chevy Silverado. The owner advised that he believed that it happened on Friday, 07/28/17 between the hours of 1300 to 1700 when he had parked his pickup and boat trailer in the parking lot at the above location. He believed it was struck by a boat trailer as the damage was on the lower area of his passenger side front door. There was also red paint transfer left on the pickup door. The damage to the door is estimated at $1,700.00. Burglary

Reported: Friday, 07/28/17 at 1300.
Location: 3500 Block Main Ave. S. (Rural Brookings, SD)

On the above date and time the Sheriff’s Office responded to storage units that had been broken into at the above location. The renter of the storage units advised that two units had been broken into and the locks had been cut off. The suspect or suspects then entered the units and stole multiple hand and power tools. The stolen tools are valued at $3,544.00. The break is believed to have occurred between Thursday, 07/27/17 from 1815 to Friday, 07/28/17 at 1255. On the above date and time the Elkton Fire Dept., Elkton Ambulance, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to two motorcycles that were involved in an accident. It was found that both motorcycle drivers were traveling north side by side at the above location, and came across a cow that was in the roadway. Both motorcycles tipped over attempting to avoid striking the cow. One of the riders thought he may have just clipped the cow. Both riders were taken by the Elkton Ambulance to the Brookings Hospital to be treated for unknown injuries. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Aggravated Assault

Reported: Wednesday, 07/26/17 at 1342
Location: 100 Blk E. Front St. in Aurora, SD

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to the above location for a reported domestic assault. The suspect 33 year old Jeramey Michael Garver had left the scene before the deputies arrived. The suspect was later located in Bruce, SD. While talking to the suspect he ran from deputies on foot. The deputies pursued on foot and in a patrol vehicle. While pursuing, the suspect pulled a handgun from his waistband, which he later attempted to hide while running. The suspect was taken into custody and is charged with Aggravated assault/Domestic, aggravated assault against Law Enforcement, obstructing Law Enforcement, carrying concealed weapon on person without a license, possession of a loaded firearm while intoxicated, driving without a valid license, and interference with emergency communications. Garver is being held in the Brookings County Detention Center on a $10,000 dollar cash bond.

Rollover Accident ( Injury )

The vehicle was eastbound on 215th street near the intersection of 474th Ave. The driver hit some washboard area on the gravel road and lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle entered the North ditch then came back onto the roadway and rolled. The driver and the passenger were taken by ambulance to the Brookings Hospital. The driver was treated for injuries at the Brookings Hospital. The Passenger was airlifted to Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls to be treated for his injuries. The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, Brookings Police Dept., Aurora Fire Dept. and Brookings Ambulance all responded to the accident.

Theft

Location:  200 blk. 37th St. S., and 100 blk. of 38th St. S. (Rural Brookings, SD)

On the above date and time two rural Brookings residents reported the entry of unlocked motor vehicles.  An undisclosed amount of cash, a bottle of 90 Hydrocodone pills, and a pair of black Fossil sunglasses valued at $50.00 was stolen from one of the vehicles.  The other vehicle had a pack of cigarettes & lighter, and a black with yellow lettering Innova brand disc golf bag containing 24 Innova brand disks, 16 green, and 8 white.  Some of the disks also had the owner’s name and phone number on them.  The Innova bag and disks are valued at $540.00.  The thefts are believed to have occurred sometime between Saturday, 07/01/17 at midnight to when they were noticed on Saturday, 07/01/17 at 7:00 AM.  Anyone with any information about this case can contact the Brookings County Sheriffs Office at 605-696-8300 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously by visiting www.brookingsareacrimestoppers.com or by calling 605-692-STOP (7867).
