Car Fire

Reported: 9-21-18 @ 0144hrs
Location: 207th Street and 465th Ave.

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s office, Brookings Police and Volga Fire Dept. responded to a vehicle on fire at the above location. Upon arrival the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames. Volga Fire was able put the fire out. The 2009 Suzuki SX4 was a total loss. No injuries were reported. The fire is under investigation by the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office and Brookings Fire Dept. responded to some hay bales on fire at the above location. It was found that two round grass hay bales were on fire. Brookings Fire put the fire out. The two bales were a total loss and valued at $100. The fire is under investigation by the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Location: Near 213th St. and Hwy 14. (Rural Elkton, SD)

On the above date and time the Elkton Fire Dept., Elkton Ambulance, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a hay baler that was on fire in a field located at the above location. The hay baler was being operated by the owner when it caught on fire. The hay baler was a total loss and was valued at $4,000.00.

Residential House Fire

Reported: Friday, 09/14/18 @ 0004
Location: Near 461st Ave. and 205th St. (Rural Bruce, SD)

On the above date and time the Bruce Fire Dept., Brookings Ambulance, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residential fire at the above location. The residents of the home were present and were alerted by the fire alarm in the home. They located the fire in a bedroom and tried to extinguish it with a garden hose but were unable to do so. Once the Bruce Fire Dept. arrived they were able to extinguish the fire. All occupants were able to get out of the home unharmed. The home received substantial fire and smoke damage, but an exact amount of damage is unknown at this time. The fire is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Fire

Sunday, 09/16/18 @ 0435
Location: 473rd Ave. and 208th St. (Rural Brookings, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings Fire Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a pickup box bed that had been converted into a trailer that was on fire, at the above location. The fire was extinguished by the Brookings Fire Dept. The cause of the fire is unknown. The trailer contained two propane tanks, spent ammunition casings, a small freezer, and miscellaneous scrap metal. The trailer and its contents were a complete loss. There was no license plate for the trailer or any identifying numbers stamped into the trailer. Injury accident

Location: Near 459th Ave. on 216th St.

Driver: Maricel Abad Olson Age: 37
Volga, SD
Vehicle: 2005 Chevy Colorado Damage: $10,000.00

On the above date and time the Sinai Fire Dept., Brookings Ambulance, Lake County Sheriff’s Office, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a one vehicle rollover accident at the above location. It was found that 37 year old Maricel Abad Olson was traveling westbound on 216th St. near 459th Ave. in a 2005 Chevy Colorado. Maricel advised that she was tired and believed that she may fell asleep and lost control of the vehicle which caused it to roll into the north ditch where it went through a fence and came to rest on the passenger side. The driver was transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Brookings Ambulance with unknown injuries.

Pursuit

Date & Time: Wednesday, 09/05/18 @ 2134
Location: 220th St. and 467th Ave.

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office assisted the Moody County Sheriff’s Office, and Lake County Sheriff’s Office with a pursuit that started in Moody County. The pursuit entered Brookings County went down several township roads and into the Lake Campbell State boat access on the North end of the Lake. The suspect vehicle then exited onto Sunset Drive at a high rate of speed. The suspect vehicle crossed a private yard and entered onto Valley View Rd, where it then turned onto County Club Drive. The suspect vehicle drove through another private yard on County Club Drive where it became stuck on a decorative rock. A Moody County Deputy positioned his vehicle behind the suspect vehicle. The suspect vehicle then accelerated rapidly in reverse where it came off of the rock and ran into the Moody County Deputy’s vehicle causing disabling damage to the patrol vehicle. The pursuit then continued onto 469th Ave. where the vehicle ran a stop sign and headed south at speeds of up to 100 mph in the 55 mph zone. The suspect vehicle was at times traveling southbound in the northbound lane. The vehicle then went off the roadway into a cornfield and back onto the roadway at the intersection of 220th St. and 469th Ave. The pursuing units then lost sight of the suspect vehicle and were not able to locate it.

On Thursday, 09/06/18 at about 0700 a citizen reported a man walking northbound on 467th Ave. near 216th St. Deputies responded and found this to be the suspect from the pursuit. The suspect vehicle was located on 468th Ave. about .3 tenths of a mile south of 216th St. in a slough. The driver 49 year old David Keith Schultz, Sioux Falls SD was found to be under the influence of a narcotics.

Schultz is being charged with Intentional Damage to Property, Reckless Driving, Speeding, Lane driving violations, Aggravated Eluding, Stop Sign Violation, Ingestion of a Controlled Substance, and DUI. Bond has been set at $2500 cash or surety.

South Dakota State University Police Dept., and Brookings Police Dept. also assisted.

Vandalism

Location: 3200 Blk of Western Ave. S. (Rural Brookings, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report from a rural Brookings resident of his 1962 Chevy grain truck that was parked in a pasture to the south of their residence that had both the driver’s side, and passenger side window broken out. The vandalism occurred sometime between Wednesday, 08/22/18 at 1700 to Wednesday, 08/29/18 when it was noticed at 1315. The cost to replace the widows is estimated at $700.00. Injury accident

Driver: Nicholas Sime Age: 29
White, SD
Vehicle: 2013 Ford F150 Damage: $7,500.00

On the above date and time the Aurora Fire Dept., Brookings Ambulance, SDSU Police Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to 209th St. just west of 478th Ave. for a reported injury accident. It was found that 29 year old Nicholas Sime of White had been involved in an accident at an unknown location and had driven his damaged vehicle to this location. He was transported by the Brookings Ambulance to the Brookings Hospital where he was treated for unknown injuries. The accident scene was later located at a residence near 209th St. and 477th Ave. It was found that the vehicle was traveling eastbound where it entered the south ditch and struck a mailbox and driveway approach. The vehicle then vaulted landing on the other side of the approach and it travelled through a fence and into a pasture, and then drove out and left the scene of the accident. The driver was wearing his seatbelt, but alcohol was a contributing factor. The driver 29 year old Nicholas Sime is charged with DUI, hit and run property damage, and reckless driving.

Residential Fire.

Reported: Thursday, 08/16/18 @ 2125
Location: Near intersection of 199th St. and 459th Ave. (Arlington, SD)

On the above date and time the Badger Fire Dept., Bruce Fire Dept. SD GF&P Park Ranger, and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residential structure fire at the above location. The cause of the fire is believed to be from a dehumidifier that was in the basement of the home. A chest freezer appeared to be damaged, but at the time of the report no other personal property appeared to be lost. The home did receive some smoke damage and structural damage, but the amount of damage is unknown at this time. No one was injured. The fire is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office. The stolen golf carts are 2015 Club Cars, which are blue and black in color and are valued at $5,000.00 each. The golf carts were parked outside the Country Club and theft occurred sometime between Tuesday, 07/31/18 at 2100 to Wednesday, 08/01/18 at 0700. Missing or stolen cattle

Reported: Monday, 07/30/18 @ 1450.
Location: Near 200th St. and 482nd Ave. (Rural White, SD)

On the above date and time a rural White, SD resident reported 14 head of cattle that were missing. He advised about 14 to 17 days ago several head of cattle got out of a pen at their residence. The owner thought they had gotten all of the cattle in but now realized there was 14 head of cattle missing. The missing cattle are black with green ear tags and weigh approx.. 1000 pounds each. The value of the cattle is estimated at $18,000.00. On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a 2001 Honda Prelude that was stolen from the above location. The stolen vehicle is blue in color with two black front fenders, a black hood, and the dash inside the vehicle has been disassembled. The vehicle was last seen on the property on Monday, July 23rd, 2018. On the above date and time the Brookings Fire Dept., Brookings Ambulance, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to an injury accident with a motorcycle and deer. It was found that a deer came out of the median and collided with a motorcycle that was travelling southbound on I29 near MM143. The driver 56 year old Anthony Weelborg was transported by ambulance to the Brookings Hospital, where he was later airlifted to a Sioux Falls Hospital with unknown injuries. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Structure Fire

On the above date and time Elkton Ambulance, Elkton Fire Dept., and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a shop that was on fire at the above location. The shop contained several 55 gallon drums of racing fuel, HVAC inventory, a welder, an El Camino racing car, a 1977 Chevy pickup, heat pumps, and a large amount of tools. The building and it’s contents are believed to be a total loss. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Hit and Run Accident

On the above date and time a Volga resident reported that their 2001 Ford Explorer had received a large dent in the lower driver’s side door. The cost to repair the door is estimated at $1,500.00. Burglary

On the above date and time a Volga resident reported the theft of a 2003 FLH Harley Davidson Motorcycle, 1 blue/white couch, 2 red Craftsman tool boxes, 1 large stuffed dolphin, 2 Hawkeye drones, Stereo equipment (DD subwoofers), and 4 new tires with rims. The items were stolen from a storage unit at the above location. The lock mechanism was broke on the storage unit. The cost to replace the locking mechanism is unknown at this time. The estimated values of all items stolen is $15,000.00. The burglary occurred sometime between Monday, 06/11/18 at midnight to when it was noticed on Wednesday, 07/11/18 at 2140. The total loss is estimated at $200.00. The values of the Fencer and Battery was estimated at $920.00. On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a stolen antique iron drag. The theft happened sometime within the last two weeks. It is described as being 5 feet by 5 feet with iron teeth and is distinguishable as the brackets that hold the chain in place had broken and were replaced with yellow plastic that stands out. The value of the drag is unknown. . Minor Injury accident.

Vehicle: 2017 Harley Davidson Motorcycle Damage: $5,000.00

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a motorcycle collided with a deer at the above location. It was found that Kevin Harms was traveling northbound on 459th Ave. north of 201st St. when a deer entered the roadway. The motorcycle collided with the deer. The passenger 53 year old Lisa Harms was thrown from the motorcycle. Both the driver and passenger were wearing helmets and eye protection. The driver was not injured. Bruce fire and rescue, and the Brookings Ambulance responded to the accident. Lisa Harms was transported by private party to the Brookings Hospital to be seen for unknown injuries. The accident is under investigation by the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Lost Property

Location: South of Hwy 14 on 469th Ave. (Rural Brookings, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a black Advanced Armament 7.62-SDN-6 suppressor that was accidently left on the bed rail of a truck and was now missing. The owner of the Suppressor advised that he was shooting and had taken the Suppressor off of his weapon and set it on the bed rail of his truck. He left the residence forgetting that he had left it on the bed rail of the truck and it fell off somewhere. The Suppressor is believed to be lost and not stolen. Structure Fire

Location: 484th Ave. near 199th St. Hendricks, MN
Reported: 6/19/18 @ 10:35p.m.

On the above date and time the Brookings County sheriff’s Office, Hendricks Fire Dept. and White Fire Dept. responded to a structure fire at the above location. Upon arrival the garage area of the home was fully engulfed and quickly spread to the rest of the home. Due to the size of the fire mutual aid was requested in which Aurora, Elkton, Bruce, Sinai, Volga, and Brookings Fire Departments all responded to help put out the fire. All occupants of the home were able to evacuate safely. The home was a complete loss as well as several vehicles, a boat, skid steer, and riding lawn mower. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office. Other assisting agencies were the White Ambulance and Hendricks Ambulance.

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a Hit & Run that occurred at the above location. It was found that sometime on Saturday, 06/02/18 a vehicle was traveling west on 212th St. and entered the north ditch where it struck a sign owned by the Brookings County Hwy Dept. Blue paint transfer was left on the sign. The cost to replace the sign is $100.00. It was found that a 2006 Chevy Silverado driven by 20 year old Christian Jager was traveling southbound on I-29 when it entered the median then over corrected entering the west road ditch where the vehicle rolled over onto its roof. The driver was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle. The driver was transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Brooking Ambulance where he was later transferred to a Sioux Falls Hospital with unknown injuries. Alcohol is believed to have been a contributing factor in the accident. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office and charges from the accident are pending.

Vehicle fire

Location: Near 458th Ave. and 218th St.

On the above date and time the Sinai Fire Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a vehicle fire at the above location. It was found that the vehicle had not been ran for approx. 2 months and was driven from a hay field to the above location. When the driver parked the vehicle he noticed smoke coming from the engine compartment. The entire vehicle, which was a 1991 Ford F250 is a total loss. The fire is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Unoccupied structure fire.

Reported: Sunday, 05/27/18 at 1451.
Location: Near 472nd Ave. and 198th St. (Rural Bruce, SD)

On the above date and time the Bruce Fire Dept., Brookings Fire Dept., Aurora Fire Dept., Volga Fire Dept., White Fire Dept., Estelline Fire Dept., Brookings Ambulance, and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a structure fire at an abandoned acreage. It was found that the unoccupied home, and 5 other outbuildings had caught on fire. Lost in the fire were several old antiques inside of the home, two old scrap metal vehicles, and misc. tools. A skid steer was also damaged but was still functional. The value of the loss is unknown at this time. The cause of the fire is unknown and under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Fire

Location: Near 481st Ave. and 216th St. (Rural Elkton, SD)

On the above date and time the Elkton Fire Dept., Aurora Fire Dept., Elkton Ambulance, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to several corn stalk bales and a skid steer that had caught on fire. It was found that the fire originated from the skid steer and was near the corn stalk bales. The wind contributed to the fire spreading quickly amongst the bales. The skid steer and bales were a complete loss. The total loss was $38,570.00. The cause of the fire in the skid steer is believed to be electrical in nature. The fire is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Burglary

Reported: Monday, 05/21/18 @ 1425
Location: Near 219th St. and 473rd Ave. (Rural Brookings, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a burglary to an abandoned acreage located near the above location. It was found that a suspect or suspects forced their way into the building through the front door. The suspect or suspects stole 2 Vexlar fish finders, a Black & Decker 14.4v cordless drill set, a Black & Decker 18v cordless drill set, a gas powered ice auger with dirt bit, a Stihl hedge trimmer, and a Skill chop saw. The items stolen are valued at $2,240.00. The damage to the door is unknown at this time. The burglary occurred sometime between April 15th, 2018 to when it was noticed on May 21st, 2018. Burglary

Reported: 5-18-18 @ 0322hrs
Location: 300 block of highway 14 in Volga

On the above date and time Deputies responded to an alarm at a business on the 300 Blk of Hwy 14 in Volga, SD. Upon arrival it was found that the business had been broken into through a door on the east side of the building, which had been taken off of its hinges. One video lottery machine had been broken into and an undisclosed amount of cash was stolen. The other video lottery machines, and an ATM were tampered with but nothing was taken. Injury accident

Location: I-29 at the 134 mile post
Driver: Jessica Boyles Age: 25
Brookings, SD
Vehicle: 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix Damage: Total Loss.

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a one vehicle injury accident. It was found that 25 year old Jessica Boyles was traveling northbound on I29 near MM 134 when she lost control of the vehicle and struck multiple linear posts, a metal guardrail, metal cables, and a bridge. Jessica was transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Brookings Ambulance where she was treated for unknown injuries. Alcohol was found to be a contributing factor and she was arrested for DUI 1st, reckless driving, no valid DL, a seatbelt violation and active warrants. The damage to the bridge is unknown at this time. The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, SDSU Police, Brookings Police, Brookings Fire Department and the Brookings Ambulance all responded to the accident. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Hit and Run

Reported: Wednesday, 05/09/18 @ 0915
Location: Bridge between 479th Ave. & 480th Ave. on 211th St.

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office was called to the above location to take a report of a vehicle that had struck the bridge in that location, causing damage to the bridge. It was found that an unknown vehicle was traveling eastbound when it struck the southwest corner of the bridge. The vehicle continued eastbound and struck the northeast corner of the bridge as well. The vehicle left the scene of the accident. The suspect vehicle is believed to be black in color and should have noticeable damage to the front bumper and fender. The date and time of the accident is unknown. The cost to repair the damage is unknown at this time.
