Injury accident

Reported: Monday, 06/26/17 at 1930
Location: 198th St. just west of 466th Ave.

Injured Driver: Kaytlyn Hawley Age: 15
Estelline, SD
Vehicle: 2001 GMC Yukon Damage: $5,000.00

Injured Passenger: Sophia Hall Age: 14
Estelline, SD

On the above date and time the Bruce Fire Dept., Estelline Fire Dept., Estelline Ambulance, & Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a one vehicle rollover accident at the above location. It was found that 15 year old Kaytlyn Hawley of Estelline, SD was driving a 2001 GMC Yukon west on 198th St. and lost control of the vehicle on some loose gravel. The vehicle then entered the north ditch. The vehicle then came back onto the roadway where it rolled over onto its side. There were three occupants in the vehicle with Kaytlyn. The driver Kaytlyn Hawley and one of the passengers 14 year old Sophia Hall were transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Estelline Ambulance with unknown injuries. All occupants in the vehicle were wearing their seatbelts. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Injury Accident

Reported: Friday, 06/23/17 at 0640
Location: 471st Ave. about ½ mile south of 205th St.

Injured Driver: Mariluz Corado-Delarosa Age: 20
Brookings, SD
Vehicle: 2001 Chrystler Sebring Damage: Complete Loss

Injured Passenger: Landin Christian Rosas Age: 16
Volga, SD

On the above date and time 20 year old Mariluz Corodo-Delorsa was driving her 2001 Chrysler Sebring north on 471st Ave. about a ½ mile south of 205th St. when two deer came out of the west ditch. She swerved to miss the deer and entered the east ditch where the vehicle rolled. Mariluz and the passenger 16 year old Landin Christian Rosas were transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Brookings Ambulance with unknown injuries. Mariluz was issued a citation for no valid drivers license. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Alcohol Compliance Check

Thursday, 06/22/17

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office completed compliance checks of 10 businesses in Brookings County. No businesses failed the compliance check and sold alcohol to the 20 year old buyer. During the previous compliance check in March of 2017, all of the 9 businesses that were checked also passed.

Media Release - June 15, 2017

Theft

Reported: Thursday, June 15, 2017
Location: Jay Street Bruce

On the afternoon of 06/15/17, the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a stolen Lenovo laptop device from a car parked on Jay St. in Bruce, SD. Surveillance video shows a Hispanic male in his mid to late 20’s, attempting to make entry into the car, breaking off a door handle. The suspect then finds and unlocked door and enters the vehicle, remaining in it for some time. The suspect is seen on surveillance video leaving the car with an item in his hands shaped like a laptop. The suspect then returns to the car, enters it and waits inside the car for approximately 20 minutes before exiting and leaving the area. The owner of the car later discovered the missing item and this was reported.

Attempted break in

Reported: Friday, 06/16/17 @ 0840.
Location: 400 blk of 1st St. E. (Volga, SD)

On the above date and time a Volga resident reported that someone attempted to break into the victim’s residence through an unlocked window. It is believed to have happened sometime between Tuesday, 06/13/17 at 2000 to when it was noticed on Thursday, 06/15/17 at 0930. The victim did not believe the suspect or suspects gained entry into the residence as nothing was found disturbed inside the home. The screen and inside sliding window were found missing and will cost $150.00 to replace. Media Release - June 21, 2017

Theft

Reported: Wednesday, 06/21/17 at 2114
Location: Rural Brookings, SD

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of two stolen motorcycles (dirt bikes) that were taken from a rural Brookings residence. The motorcycles were stolen sometime between Monday, 06/19/17 at midnight to when they were noticed missing on Wednesday, 06/21/17 at 2100. The motorcycles are described as a 2007-2008 150cc Red Cat dirt bike red in color, and a 1978-1979 90cc Kawasaki dirt bike blue in color. The total amount of loss for the two bikes is $1,200.00. Two vehicle injury accident

Reported Wednesday, 06/21/17 at 1300
Location: Hwy 14 and Hwy 81 Intersection south of Arlington, SD

Driver vehicle one: Laura Jennifer Wilson Age: 42
Arlington, SD
Vehicle one: 2004 Chevy Monte Carlo Damage: Total loss

Driver vehicle two: Linda Fay Swartos Age: 64
Volga, SD
Vehicle two: 2006 Chevy Cobalt Damage: Total loss.

On the above date and time the Arlington Fire Dept., Arlington Ambulance, Kingsbury County Sheriff’s Office, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two vehicle injury accident at the intersection of Hwy 14 and Hwy 81 south of Arlington. It was found that Driver #1 was traveling east on Hwy 14, when Driver #2 attempted to turn south onto Hwy 81 in front of Driver #1’s car. Driver #1 was then struck by Driver #2, which caused extensive damage to both vehicles. Both drivers were transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Arlington Ambulance with unknown injuries. Driver #2 was issued a citation for failure to yield while turning left, and Driver #1 was issued a citation for no seatbelt. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

SCAM

Reported: Thursday, 06/15/16 @ 1000
Location: Volga, SD

On the above date and time a Volga resident called and reported being scammed out of $20,000.00 cash. The victim advised that they had received a call from whom they thought was their Granddaughter who lives in Texas on Wednesday, 06/14/17. The victim was told that she had been arrested in Texas for a drug violation and the reporting party needed to talk to the Officer. A male subject advised the victim that he was a Narcotics Investigator and the victim’s Granddaughter had been arrested and had a $20,000.00 cash bond. The victim was advised that it could be paid by money order, which would take 7 days, she do a money transfer but that would take 3 days, or the victim could send cash via Federal Express to an address in Brooklyn, NY and she would be released in the morning when the money was received. The victim was also advised to not tell anyone about this as there was a gag order issued and that would be detrimental to the victim’s Granddaughter.

The victim decided to send the cash via Federal Express so their Granddaughter would be released the next morning. The victim then found out on the morning of Thursday, 06/15/17 that it was a SCAM as the victim had been in contact with their Granddaughter that morning who advised she had not been in any trouble. By this time the victim had checked and Federal Express had already delivered the package.
We believe that the suspect gained information about the victim’s Granddaughter through social media and used that information to help convince the victim that it was their Granddaughter on the phone.
The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office would like the general public to be aware of these SCAMS. Bonds like this would never be sent through the mail. Please always contact your local Law Enforcement Agency so we can check to see if it is a SCAM or a legitimate claim.

Burglary

Location: 700 blk E. 1st St. (Volga, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a break in at the above location. It was found that sometime on Tuesday around 11a.m. someone entered an unlocked residence while the owners were gone. It was found that items inside the home had been gone through, and a Military Dog Tag was stolen. Nothing else was found to be missing. Injury accident


Reported: Saturday, 06/03/17 @ 2030
Location: Hwy 14 & Caspian Ave. (Volga, SD)

Driver Vehicle 1: Emil Misar Age: 80
Brookings, SD
Vehicle 1: 2006 Polaris Ranger Damage: Total loss

Driver Vehicle 2: Karen Vostad Age: 66
Volga, SD
Vehicle 2: 2011 Ford Explorer Damage: $5,000.00

On the above date and time Volga Fire Dept., Brookings Ambulance, and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to an injury accident at the above location. It was found that 80 year old Emil Misar was travelling eastbound on the shoulder of Hwy 14 just west of Caspian Ave in Volga in Volga in a 2006 Polaris Ranger. The Polaris Ranger then came across the two eastbound lanes of Hwy 14 in front of a 2011 Ford Explorer driven by 66 year old Karen Vostad. The vehicles then collided. 80 year old Emil Misar was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the Polaris Ranger and received serious injuries. He was transported by the Brookings Ambulance and later airlifted to Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls. Alcohol is believed to be a factor and charges are pending. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Driver Vehicle 1: Heather Witte Age: 44

Vehicle 1: 2016 Chevy Suburban Damage: Total loss.

Driver Vehicle 2: Caleb Kirschenmann Age: 17
Dell Rapids, SD
Vehicle 2: 2016 Mazda 6 Sport Damage: Total loss.

On the above date and time, the White Ambulance, Watertown Ambulance, Deuel County Sheriff’s Office, and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to an injury accident at the above location. It was found that 44 year old Heather Witte was traveling northbound on I29 and was attempting to turn around in an emergency and maintenance vehicle crossing in the median of I29 near Mile Marker 146 in her 2016 Chevy Suburban. 17 year old Caleb Kirschenmann was also traveling northbound at 80 MPH in his 2016 Mazda 6 sport. Caleb’s vehicle then collided with the rear of Heathers vehicle. Caleb Kirschenmann was then transported by ambulance to the Brookings Emergency Room with unknown injuries. Heather Witte was issued a citation for crossing the median. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Hit and Run

Location: 400 blk. Beaver St. (Elkton, SD)

On the above date and time an Elkton resident reported an enclosed trailer that had been parked outside the residence on the street had been struck by a vehicle. The reporting party advised that sometime between Sunday, 05/21/17 at 2100 to Monday, 05/22/17 at 1500 an unknown party ran into the trailer causing damage to it. The amount of damage is unknown at this time. Driver 2: Benjamin Jon Mitchell Age: 20
Vehicle 2: 2001 Chevy Silverado Damage: $5,000.00

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 2 vehicle injury accident in the 700 blk. of 22nd Ave. S. It was found that 39 year old Eric Michael Lee was traveling south in a 2017 Ford Explorer Brookings Police vehicle, when 20 year old Benjamin Jon Mitchell was pulling out of the driveway of the Brookings Mall turning north. Mitchell advised that there were two vehicles that were turning into the Brookings Mall driveway and he did not see the police vehicle in the other lane when he pulled out. The vehicle’s then collided causing extensive damage to the front of both vehicles. Brookings Police Office Lee was taken to the hospital by another officer to be seen for possible injuries. The driver of the other vehicle Benjamin Mitchell was issued a citation for failure to yield entering a roadway.

Theft

Location: Rural Aurora, SD

On the above date and time a rural Aurora resident stopped at the Sheriff’s Office and reported the theft of a red Honda generator that was stolen from a shed located on his farm. The theft is believed to have happened sometime in early January to mid-January, 2017. The generator is valued at $700.00. The reporting party did not report the theft until now as they thought that someone might have borrowed it. On the above date and time a resident that lives in the 1300 Blk. of E. Hwy 14 in Volga reported damage to the window of a 2005 Saturn Vue. The vehicle was parked in the driveway of the residence and rear passenger side door window had been broken. The damage occurred sometime between Saturday, 05/13/17 at 0600 to when it was noticed at 1100. The cost of repair is unknown at this time. Media Release - May 12, 2017

Structure Fire


Reported: Friday, 05/12/17 at 1505
Location: Rural Arlington, SD

On the above date and time the Arlington Fire Dept., Bruce Fire Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a rural Arlington residence for a garage that was on fire along with several sheds on the property. The garage and sheds were a complete loss. Several items inside the garage and sheds were lost as well. Some of the notable items lost were a new Grasshopper lawn mower, a 1977 Yamaha 750 motorcycle, a boat, a camper, and a golf cart. The cause of the fire is believed to be electrical in nature. The total amount lost is unknown at this time. The fire is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Scam


Reported: Tuesday, May 9th 2017

On the above date and time a Brookings Resident came into the Brookings County Sheriff's Office to report a scam. The reporting party advised they were contacted via phone by a male claiming to be a Deputy with the Brookings County Sheriff's Office and that we had an arrest warrant for her for failure to appear for Jury Duty. The reporting party was instructed to stay on the phone with the caller and drive to a local convenience store and put $2000.00 on pre-paid Green Dot cards. The reporting party was then instructed to give the account numbers for the Green Dot cards to the caller and then mail the cards with the receipts for purchase to the Brookings County Clerk of Courts. It should be noted that once the caller/scammer has the account numbers for the Green Dot cards, your money can be immediately accessed by the scammer and it will be gone and law enforcement is not likely able to trace where your money is sent. The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office would like the public to know that law enforcement will never contact you and direct you to put money on Green Dot cards, Apple iTunes cards, or other forms of pre-paid cash cards to pay fines. If you get a phone call similar to this, please hang up immediately and contact law enforcement.

Driver unit 1: Jessica Mix Age: 30

Driver unit 1: Carl Madsen Age: 79

Vehicle 2: 2004 John Deer 5320 tractor & manure spreader Damage: $1,500.00

On the above date and time Jessica Mix was traveling south on 469th Ave about ¼ south of 217th St. in a 2001 Chevy Tahoe, when she struck the back of a manure spreader that was being pulled behind a 2004 John Deer 5320 tractor. The tractor and manure spreader received some $1,500.00 worth of damage and the vehicle Jessica was driving was a total loss. Jessica was transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Brookings Ambulance with unknown injuries. Jessica was issued citations for careless driving and a seat belt violation. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Burglary


Reported: Sunday, 05/07/17 at 1200
Location: Rural Volga, SD

On the above date and time a rural Volga resident reported a burglary at their residence. The home was left unlocked and someone entered the home between the hours of 0800 to 1130 on that day. An undisclosed amount of cash and jewelry were stolen from the residence. Some of the jewelry was described as a ring size 10 or 11 with a silver colored band with red and white inlet cutouts of Cleopatra and Mark Anthony on the ring. A manual watch with gold colored ring around the clock portion with a silver colored stretch band, and a set of cross earrings with flowers on them was also stolen. Aggravated Assault


Reported: Saturday, 05/06/17 at 0510
Location: 100 Blk W. 5th St. (White, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a subject that had broken out windows to a residence and threatened the occupants of the residence with a knife. It was found that the suspect 25 year old Jesus Carlos Lopez of Estelline SD had taken a male and female by knife point and demanded they drive him to the above residence. Upon arrival at the residence the suspect broke out the window and threatened three occupants with the knife. The deputy arrived on scene and was able to take the suspect into custody. Jesus is charged with Kidnapping, aggravated assault, simple assault, and intentional damage to property. No injuries were reported. He is currently being held at the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office with a $30,000.00 cash bond.

Media Release - May 4, 2017


Fire


Reported: Thursday, 5/4/2017 @ 1615
Location: 214th street and 481st Ave.

On the above date and time the Aurora Fire Dept. and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a Bobcat Skid-Steer that was on fire. It was found that the owner of the Skid-Steer was using it to fix fence and noticed smoke coming from the back of the Skid-Steer. He drove it to the roadway and got out. The Skid-Steer then became fully engulfed in flames. The 2012 Bobcat Skid-Steer was valued at $40,000.00 and was a complete loss. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Hit and Run

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a storage unit that was hit. The storage unit was hit by an unknown vehicle or trailer causing an estimated $4,300.00 worth of damage. The incident is believed to have happened sometime between the evening of Friday, 04/28/17 to the afternoon of Tuesday, 05/02/17.
