SCAM

Reported: Thursday, 06/15/16 @ 1000
Location: Volga, SD

On the above date and time a Volga resident called and reported being scammed out of $20,000.00 cash. The victim advised that they had received a call from whom they thought was their Granddaughter who lives in Texas on Wednesday, 06/14/17. The victim was told that she had been arrested in Texas for a drug violation and the reporting party needed to talk to the Officer. A male subject advised the victim that he was a Narcotics Investigator and the victim’s Granddaughter had been arrested and had a $20,000.00 cash bond. The victim was advised that it could be paid by money order, which would take 7 days, she do a money transfer but that would take 3 days, or the victim could send cash via Federal Express to an address in Brooklyn, NY and she would be released in the morning when the money was received. The victim was also advised to not tell anyone about this as there was a gag order issued and that would be detrimental to the victim’s Granddaughter.

The victim decided to send the cash via Federal Express so their Granddaughter would be released the next morning. The victim then found out on the morning of Thursday, 06/15/17 that it was a SCAM as the victim had been in contact with their Granddaughter that morning who advised she had not been in any trouble. By this time the victim had checked and Federal Express had already delivered the package.
We believe that the suspect gained information about the victim’s Granddaughter through social media and used that information to help convince the victim that it was their Granddaughter on the phone.
The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office would like the general public to be aware of these SCAMS. Bonds like this would never be sent through the mail. Please always contact your local Law Enforcement Agency so we can check to see if it is a SCAM or a legitimate claim.
