On the above date and time the Elkton Fire Dept., Elkton Ambulance, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a vehicle rollover at the above location. It was found that 20 year old Tristan Bergmann was traveling west on Hwy 14 and lost control of the vehicle due to the slippery road conditions. The vehicle entered the north ditch were it rolled. Tristan was transported to the Brookings Hospital with unknown injuries by the Elkton Ambulance. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Fire

Reported: Sunday, 01/13/19 @ 1509
Location: Rural White, SD.

On the above date and time the White Fire Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a Bobcat Skid Steer that was on fire at a rural White residence. It was found that the owner had plugged the Skid Steer in to warm it up before using it. The owner advised that a short time later he noticed fire coming from the back of the Bobcat. Once the White Fire Dept. arrived they extinguished the fire. The Skid Steer received some $12,000.00 worth of damage. The fire is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Hit and Run

Location 200 Blk of E. Hwy 14, Volga, SD

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a hit and run accident that happened sometime between Wednesday, 12/26/18 at 1700 to when it was noticed on Thursday, 12/27/18. It was found that the 2003 Honda Pilot had been parked at a residence and was struck by another vehicle causing some $800 worth of damage to the front driver side of the vehicle. Fire

Reported: Friday, 12/28/18 @ 1125
Location: Rural Arlington, SD

On the above date and time the Arlington Fire Dept., Arlington Ambulance, Bruce Fire Dept., and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a tractor that was on fire. The fire was extinguished by the Arlington Fire Dept., but the John Deer Model 7400 was a total loss and estimated at $56,000.00. It was found the owner had pulled the tractor into a shed as a joy stick had frozen up on it. The owner put a portable propane heater on it and left for approx. 5 minutes and returned and found the tractor on fire. The tractor was pulled out of the shed while it was on fire to avoid the shed starting on fire. The fire is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

On the above date and time at the above location the Elkton Ambulance, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a roll-over accident. It was found that 48 year old Patrick Dirckx was traveling south on Hwy 13 and lost control of the vehicle on the slippery road conditions on the curve on the west side of Elkton. The vehicle entered the east ditch where it rolled. Patrick was taken by ambulance to the Brookings Hospital with unknown injuries. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

The vehicle was eastbound on 206th St. As it was nearing the intersection of 461st Ave, it began to lose control on the washboards in the road. The road was also icy at the time and the driver was unable to regain control of the vehicle. The vehicle entered the south ditch where it rolled onto its top. The driver was taken by private party to the Brookings Hospital to be treated for unknown injuries.

Vehicle 1 was stopped at the stop sign at 458th Ave. and HWY 14. The driver stated he looked both directions and couldn’t see anyone coming in the dense fog at the time. Vehicle 1 began to turn westbound onto HWY 14. As vehicle 1 made the turn onto HWY 14, vehicle 2, a 2006 Dodge Ram Pickup, was traveling west on HWY 14 approaching the intersection the intersection with 458th Ave. Vehicle 2 was unable to see vehicle 1 while it was turning due to the fog. Vehicle 2 then collided with the trailer of vehicle 1. Driver of vehicle 2 was transported to the Brookings Hospital by private party to be treated for unknown injuries.

On the above date and time Elkton Fire Dept., Elkton Ambulance, Brookings Ambulance, South Dakota Hwy Patrol, and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a SUV that was struck by a train at the above location. It was found that the 2010 Jeep Patriot was traveling south at the above location, when it failed to yield to the train. The vehicle was then struck by the train which was traveling east. The vehicle then entered the east ditch. The driver 41 year old Silveria Felix-Molina was transported to Avera McKennen Hospital in Sioux Falls with unknown injuries. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Theft

On the above date and time a rural Volga resident reported a theft of a Powerhorse Portable Inverter Generator from a building at the above location. The generator is blue and black in color and 2,000 surge watts. The generator was stolen sometime between 8-1-18 and 12-1-18. The value of the generator is $600.

Accident ( Hit & Run )

Location: I-29 milepost 135
Vehicle: 1971 Chevy Pickup orange in color. Damage $900.00

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a hit and run accident at the above location. It was found that the driver of the above vehicle was traveling northbound and observed a dark colored Chevy Pickup rapidly approaching from the rear. As the dark Chevy pickup went into the passing lane the driver lost control of the vehicle. The dark Chevy pickup’s passenger side then collided with the front driver’s side fender of his vehicle. The orange Chevy went into the east ditch, and the black Chevy pickup went into median. The black Chevy then left the scene heading northbound on I29. The Sheriff’s Office is currently trying to identify the black Chevy pickup, which should have damage to the passenger side of the vehicle, along with orange paint transfer. Theft

Reported: 11/05/18 @ 1415
Location: 20th St. S. and 34th Ave. S.

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a theft at a Bowes Construction site. It was found that the gate was locked and the lock had been broke. Stolen was 22 machinery cords comprised of copper, with a value of approx. $25,000.00. The suspect vehicle is believed to be blue in color as there were pieces of a vehicle at the scene. The theft is believed to have happened sometime between Friday, 11/02/18 at 2100 to when it was noticed on Sunday, 11/04/18 at 1200. It was found that a 2008 Dodge Avenger had been parked on the street and was struck by another vehicle. Stolen Firearm

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a stolen black Glock Gen 3 .45 caliber pistol, a full magazine of ammunition, two partial boxes of ammunition, and some prescription narcotics that were stolen from a Sinai, SD residence. The home was locked but no sign of forced entry was noticed. The theft occurred on Thursday, 10/18/18 between the hours of 0800 to 1915. Burglary suspects arrested.

On Thursday afternoon, 10-11-18, Brookings County Sheriff’s Office Investigators took two men into custody in connection with a series of residential burglaries in neighborhoods southwest of Brookings. This would be in the housing developments of River Ridge, Bridal Estates, and University Estates. The burglaries occurred between October 3rd and October 9th. Homeowners were at work or absent when the burglaries occurred, and the two men made entry into the homes through unlocked doors. Personal property was taken, including electronics, tools, musical instruments, and fishing equipment. The two men in custody are Steven Hayne (Brookings, SD) and Brandon Terrazas (Brookings, SD), both 18 years of age. The men were developed as suspects after investigators conducted a routine check for pawn records, finding some of the stolen property had been pawned at shops in Brookings and Sioux Falls. The men are being held on $3000 cash bond. They are each charged with 3 counts of 2nd degree burglary and theft from a motor vehicle.

Burglary

Location: 3200 blk of Heather Lane (Brookings, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a burglary at the above location. The owner of the home advised that they had left the residence unlocked when they left for work on 10-9-18 at 0800. The owner advised that when they returned home at 1700 on 10-9-18 they found several items missing from the home. Stolen from the home was an Xbox/1S white in color, two Xbox games (Madden 2018, NBA2K), Wii/white in color, Acoustic guitar/ mahogany in color with a hard case, Dyson vacuum, trombone, Husqvarna gas leaf blower and a Comcast connector. The estimated value of the items stolen is $2,220.00. On the above date and time Elkton Ambulance, Elkton Fire Dept., and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two vehicle injury accident at the above location. It was found that vehicle 1 was traveling east on 213th St. approaching 483rd Ave in his 2000 Dodge Ram 2500 that was pulling a stock trailer. He saw vehicle 2 was not stopping and he attempted to stop before entering the intersection, but due to the wet gravel he was unable to stop. Vehicle 1 then collided with vehicle 2 which was traveling north on 483rd Ave. Upon collision vehicle 2 rolled into the ditch on the northeast side of the intersection. Both drivers were transported by the Elkton Ambulance with unknown injuries. The driver of vehicle 1 was issued a citation for failure to yield right of way at an intersection. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

The garage was left unlocked and the theft is believed to have occurred sometime between Tuesday, 10/02/18 to when it was noticed on Friday, 10/05/18. On the above date and time two residents of Aurora reported their home being shot with a pellet gun. The one home received $100.00 worth of damage to the siding of the home. The other home received approx. $3,100.00 worth of damage to a door and windows in the home. The damage occurred sometime within the last three weeks. Combine Fire

Wednesday, 10/03/18 @ 1945
Location: Bean field near 207th St. just east of 474th Ave. (Aurora, SD).

On the above date and time the Brookings Fire Dept. and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a combine that was on fire at the above location in a bean field. The combine was being operated when the driver saw the fire in the rear of the combine. He attempted to get fire extinguisher but was unable to due to the fire spreading quickly in the high winds. The 2010 9870 John Deere combine was a total loss, approximately 400 bushels of beans were lost along with an Ipad and other personal items. The total loss is estimated at $304,800.00. The fire is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Hit and Run


Reported: Tuesday, 10/02/18 @ 1900
Location: Valley Mart Parking Lot, Volga, SD

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two vehicle non injury accident at the above location. Upon arrival one of the vehicles, which was a 2005 blue Chevy Impala fled the scene heading south on Caspian Ave at speeds of 50 mph in the 35 mph zone. The deputy pursued the vehicle, which stopped on a gravel road at the intersection of Caspian Ave. and 212th St, due to the driver’s vision being obstructed from the damaged vehicle. The vehicle was found to have been stolen from Vermillion, SD on Friday, 09/28/18. The 17 year old driver from Volga, SD was found to be a runaway from DOC in Sioux Falls. He is currently being held in JDC in Sioux Falls and is facing charges of theft of a motor vehicle, speeding, failure to maintain financial responsibility, leaving the scene of an accident, no valid driver’s license, reckless driving, eluding law enforcement, and a probation violation. The 2005 Chevy Impala that was stolen received some $3,550.00 worth of damage and the 2009 Ford F150 that was also involved in the accident in the parking lot received some $4,250.00 worth of damage. The incident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office has received complaints of vehicles passing farm equipment in no passing zones. Please remember that you must wait to pass slow moving vehicles until they are in a passing zone and it is safe to pass. Also please remember that farm equipment will be pulling into field approaches, so please make sure you are watching when you pass to make sure they are not pulling into a field approach. Vandalism

Location: 600 block of Astrachan Ave in Volga

On the above date and time a resident of Volga reported damage to a trampoline. It was found that sometime between 2100hrs on 9/29/18 and 1300hrs on 9/30/18 someone cut the trampoline. The estimated damage is $250. The incident is under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office.

Accident ( injury )

Reported: 09/22/18 @ 2200hrs
Location: 478th Ave and 207th St.

On the above date and time a deputy was notified by the Brooking Hospital of two injured people in the ER that were involved in a motorcycle vs deer accident that occurred at the above location. The driver of the motorcycle 47 year old Brian Runkle of Brandon SD said between 1900 and 2000 he was southbound on 478th Ave. He said a deer came out of the east ditch and collided with the front of his 2001 Harley Davidson. Brian said he and his passenger Barbra Hagemann age 53 of Brookings were both ejected from the motorcycle which rolled into the west ditch. Both injured people were transported by private party to the Brookings Hospital. Barbara was treated for her injuries at the Brookings Hospital and Brian was transported to Avera Hospital in Sioux Falls to be treated for his injuries.

Fire Call

Reported: 09/23/18 @ 2000hrs
Location: half a mile east of 476th Ave on 201st St.

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office and White fire Department were dispatched to the above location for a Krone Silage Chopper on fire. The driver stated he was chopping silage when he noticed the machine on fire. The driver was able to get out of the chopper without injury and the White Fire Department put the fire out. The chopper is a total loss and valued at $350,000.

Car Fire

Location: 207th Street and 465th Ave.

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s office, Brookings Police and Volga Fire Dept. responded to a vehicle on fire at the above location. Upon arrival the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames. Volga Fire was able put the fire out. The 2009 Suzuki SX4 was a total loss. No injuries were reported. The fire is under investigation by the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

It was found that two round grass hay bales were on fire. Brookings Fire put the fire out. The two bales were a total loss and valued at $100. Location: Near 213th St. and Hwy 14. (Rural Elkton, SD)

On the above date and time the Elkton Fire Dept., Elkton Ambulance, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a hay baler that was on fire in a field located at the above location. The hay baler was being operated by the owner when it caught on fire. The hay baler was a total loss and was valued at $4,000.00.

Residential House Fire

Reported: Friday, 09/14/18 @ 0004
Location: Near 461st Ave. and 205th St. (Rural Bruce, SD)

On the above date and time the Bruce Fire Dept., Brookings Ambulance, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residential fire at the above location. The residents of the home were present and were alerted by the fire alarm in the home. They located the fire in a bedroom and tried to extinguish it with a garden hose but were unable to do so. Once the Bruce Fire Dept. arrived they were able to extinguish the fire. All occupants were able to get out of the home unharmed. The home received substantial fire and smoke damage, but an exact amount of damage is unknown at this time. The fire is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Fire

Sunday, 09/16/18 @ 0435
Location: 473rd Ave. and 208th St. (Rural Brookings, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings Fire Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a pickup box bed that had been converted into a trailer that was on fire, at the above location. The fire was extinguished by the Brookings Fire Dept. The cause of the fire is unknown. The trailer contained two propane tanks, spent ammunition casings, a small freezer, and miscellaneous scrap metal. The trailer and its contents were a complete loss. There was no license plate for the trailer or any identifying numbers stamped into the trailer. Injury accident

Reported: Sunday, 09/09/18 at 0320
Location: Near 459th Ave. on 216th St.

Driver: Maricel Abad Olson Age: 37
Volga, SD
Vehicle: 2005 Chevy Colorado Damage: $10,000.00

On the above date and time the Sinai Fire Dept., Brookings Ambulance, Lake County Sheriff’s Office, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a one vehicle rollover accident at the above location. It was found that 37 year old Maricel Abad Olson was traveling westbound on 216th St. near 459th Ave. in a 2005 Chevy Colorado. Maricel advised that she was tired and believed that she may fell asleep and lost control of the vehicle which caused it to roll into the north ditch where it went through a fence and came to rest on the passenger side. The driver was transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Brookings Ambulance with unknown injuries.

Pursuit

Date & Time: Wednesday, 09/05/18 @ 2134
Location: 220th St. and 467th Ave.

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office assisted the Moody County Sheriff’s Office, and Lake County Sheriff’s Office with a pursuit that started in Moody County. The pursuit entered Brookings County went down several township roads and into the Lake Campbell State boat access on the North end of the Lake. The suspect vehicle then exited onto Sunset Drive at a high rate of speed. The suspect vehicle crossed a private yard and entered onto Valley View Rd, where it then turned onto County Club Drive. The suspect vehicle drove through another private yard on County Club Drive where it became stuck on a decorative rock. A Moody County Deputy positioned his vehicle behind the suspect vehicle. The suspect vehicle then accelerated rapidly in reverse where it came off of the rock and ran into the Moody County Deputy’s vehicle causing disabling damage to the patrol vehicle. The pursuit then continued onto 469th Ave. where the vehicle ran a stop sign and headed south at speeds of up to 100 mph in the 55 mph zone. The suspect vehicle was at times traveling southbound in the northbound lane. The vehicle then went off the roadway into a cornfield and back onto the roadway at the intersection of 220th St. and 469th Ave. The pursuing units then lost sight of the suspect vehicle and were not able to locate it.

On Thursday, 09/06/18 at about 0700 a citizen reported a man walking northbound on 467th Ave. near 216th St. Deputies responded and found this to be the suspect from the pursuit. The suspect vehicle was located on 468th Ave. about .3 tenths of a mile south of 216th St. in a slough. The driver 49 year old David Keith Schultz, Sioux Falls SD was found to be under the influence of a narcotics.

Schultz is being charged with Intentional Damage to Property, Reckless Driving, Speeding, Lane driving violations, Aggravated Eluding, Stop Sign Violation, Ingestion of a Controlled Substance, and DUI. Bond has been set at $2500 cash or surety.
