Structure Fire

Location: 484th Ave. near 199th St. Hendricks, MN
Reported: 6/19/18 @ 10:35p.m.

On the above date and time the Brookings County sheriff’s Office, Hendricks Fire Dept. and White Fire Dept. responded to a structure fire at the above location. Upon arrival the garage area of the home was fully engulfed and quickly spread to the rest of the home. Due to the size of the fire mutual aid was requested in which Aurora, Elkton, Bruce, Sinai, Volga, and Brookings Fire Departments all responded to help put out the fire. All occupants of the home were able to evacuate safely. The home was a complete loss as well as several vehicles, a boat, skid steer, and riding lawn mower. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office. Other assisting agencies were the White Ambulance and Hendricks Ambulance.

Hit & Run

Reported: Tuesday, 06/12/18 at 1510
Location: 212th St. and 488th Ave. (Minnesota/South Dakota State Line)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a Hit & Run that occurred at the above location. It was found that sometime on Saturday, 06/02/18 a vehicle was traveling west on 212th St. and entered the north ditch where it struck a sign owned by the Brookings County Hwy Dept. Blue paint transfer was left on the sign. The cost to replace the sign is $100.00. Injury accident

Reported: Tuesday, 05/29/18 at 0533

Location: I29 Southbound near MM 144
Driver: Christian Jager Age: 20
Alexandria, SD
Vehicle: 2006 Chevy Silverado Damage: Total Loss

On the above date and time the Brookings Fire Department, Brookings Ambulance and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a single vehicle rollover accident on I-29 @ MM144. It was found that a 2006 Chevy Silverado driven by 20 year old Christian Jager was traveling southbound on I-29 when it entered the median then over corrected entering the west road ditch where the vehicle rolled over onto its roof. The driver was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle. The driver was transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Brooking Ambulance where he was later transferred to a Sioux Falls Hospital with unknown injuries. Alcohol is believed to have been a contributing factor in the accident. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office and charges from the accident are pending.

Vehicle fire

Reported: Monday, 05/28/18 at 1330
Location: Near 458th Ave. and 218th St.

On the above date and time the Sinai Fire Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a vehicle fire at the above location. It was found that the vehicle had not been ran for approx. 2 months and was driven from a hay field to the above location. When the driver parked the vehicle he noticed smoke coming from the engine compartment. The entire vehicle, which was a 1991 Ford F250 is a total loss. The fire is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Unoccupied structure fire.

Reported: Sunday, 05/27/18 at 1451.
Location: Near 472nd Ave. and 198th St. (Rural Bruce, SD)

On the above date and time the Bruce Fire Dept., Brookings Fire Dept., Aurora Fire Dept., Volga Fire Dept., White Fire Dept., Estelline Fire Dept., Brookings Ambulance, and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a structure fire at an abandoned acreage. It was found that the unoccupied home, and 5 other outbuildings had caught on fire. Lost in the fire were several old antiques inside of the home, two old scrap metal vehicles, and misc. tools. A skid steer was also damaged but was still functional. The value of the loss is unknown at this time. The cause of the fire is unknown and under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Fire

Location: Near 481st Ave. and 216th St. (Rural Elkton, SD)

On the above date and time the Elkton Fire Dept., Aurora Fire Dept., Elkton Ambulance, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to several corn stalk bales and a skid steer that had caught on fire. It was found that the fire originated from the skid steer and was near the corn stalk bales. The wind contributed to the fire spreading quickly amongst the bales. The skid steer and bales were a complete loss. The total loss was $38,570.00. The cause of the fire in the skid steer is believed to be electrical in nature. The fire is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Burglary

Reported: Monday, 05/21/18 @ 1425
Location: Near 219th St. and 473rd Ave. (Rural Brookings, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a burglary to an abandoned acreage located near the above location. It was found that a suspect or suspects forced their way into the building through the front door. The suspect or suspects stole 2 Vexlar fish finders, a Black & Decker 14.4v cordless drill set, a Black & Decker 18v cordless drill set, a gas powered ice auger with dirt bit, a Stihl hedge trimmer, and a Skill chop saw. The items stolen are valued at $2,240.00. The damage to the door is unknown at this time. The burglary occurred sometime between April 15th, 2018 to when it was noticed on May 21st, 2018. Burglary

Reported: 5-18-18 @ 0322hrs
Location: 300 block of highway 14 in Volga

On the above date and time Deputies responded to an alarm at a business on the 300 Blk of Hwy 14 in Volga, SD. Upon arrival it was found that the business had been broken into through a door on the east side of the building, which had been taken off of its hinges. One video lottery machine had been broken into and an undisclosed amount of cash was stolen. The other video lottery machines, and an ATM were tampered with but nothing was taken. The Burglary is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office. Injury accident

Location: I-29 at the 134 mile post
Driver: Jessica Boyles Age: 25
Brookings, SD
Vehicle: 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix Damage: Total Loss.

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a one vehicle injury accident. It was found that 25 year old Jessica Boyles was traveling northbound on I29 near MM 134 when she lost control of the vehicle and struck multiple linear posts, a metal guardrail, metal cables, and a bridge. Jessica was transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Brookings Ambulance where she was treated for unknown injuries. Alcohol was found to be a contributing factor and she was arrested for DUI 1st, reckless driving, no valid DL, a seatbelt violation and active warrants. The damage to the bridge is unknown at this time. The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, SDSU Police, Brookings Police, Brookings Fire Department and the Brookings Ambulance all responded to the accident. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Hit and Run

Reported: Wednesday, 05/09/18 @ 0915
Location: Bridge between 479th Ave. & 480th Ave. on 211th St.

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office was called to the above location to take a report of a vehicle that had struck the bridge in that location, causing damage to the bridge. It was found that an unknown vehicle was traveling eastbound when it struck the southwest corner of the bridge. The vehicle continued eastbound and struck the northeast corner of the bridge as well. The vehicle left the scene of the accident. The suspect vehicle is believed to be black in color and should have noticeable damage to the front bumper and fender. The date and time of the accident is unknown. The cost to repair the damage is unknown at this time. Drug Arrest

Thursday, 4-26-18 @ 1530
I-29 Southbound milepost 138

On the above date and time a Brookings County Deputy stopped a 2008 Ford Explorer for a traffic violation at the above location. During the course of the stop nearly 10 pounds of marijuana was located, along with cocaine, LSD, ecstasy, processed (edible) marijuana, Adderall pills, and several items of drug paraphernalia. The driver 19 year old Jack Humphrey (Milford, IA), and passenger 20 year old John O’Neal (Spirit Lake, IA) are charged with distribution or possession with intent to distribute marijuana, ingest substance to become intoxicated, ingestion of a controlled substance as felony, possession of marijuana 1-10 pounds, possession of a controlled drug or substance, distribute/manufacture of a controlled drug, and possession of drug paraphernalia. They are both currently being held at the Brookings County Detention Center on a $10,000.00 cash bond. The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Brookings Police Dept., South Dakota University Police Dept., & South Dakota Hwy Patrol.

Vandalism

Location: Abandoned acreage near 207th St. on 469th Ave. (Rural Brookings, SD)

On the above date and time a rural Brookings resident reported a vandalism of an abandoned acreage near the above location. It was found that sometime within the last two to three weeks someone gained entry into the abandoned home and broke out two French Doors that had a total of 15 small windows in each door. The cost to replace the windows is unknown at this time. Stolen Vehicle

Location: 100 Block of S. Broadway. (Aurora, SD)

On the above date and time an Aurora, SD resident reported the theft of a tan 2007 Ford Fusion from the 100 block of S. Broadway in Aurora, SD. The vehicle has a red license plate cover on the front of the vehicle and a silver license plate cover on the rear. The license plate number 6A3765. It also has a Halloween sticker on the back window of a dad, mom, child, dog, & cat. A blue purse with a piece sign on it, two check books, two ATM cards, a credit card, a violin, a flute, and an undisclosed amount of cash were inside of the vehicle. The vehicle was stolen sometime between Wednesday, 04/25/18 at 2020 to Thursday, 04/26/18 at 0510. Hay Grinder Fire

Location: Highway 14 and 474th Ave.

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office and the Brookings Fire Department responded to a hay grinder fire on Highway 14 and 474th Ave. It is believed that the fire started in the tub of the grinder while traveling westbound on highway 14. The driver pulled over and exited the vehicle without injury and called for assistance. The damage is estimated at $50,000. The incident is under investigation by the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Flooding in Brookings County

The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office is urging the public to use caution when travelling on county and township roads due to flooding.
We have had numerous calls regarding water of the road and culverts being washed out. If you come across water over the road, please do not drive through the water, as the road could be washed out, and to take an alternate route.
If you encounter washed out roads or culverts please contact your local township officers or on county roads, the Brookings County Highway Department.

Accidental Shooting

Location: Near intersection of south of 210th St. on 468th Ave. (Rural Brookings, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, Brookings Police Dept., and Brookings Ambulance responded to a report of a shooting at the above location. It was found that a 20 year old male subject from Bruce, SD had accidently been shot in the leg with a .45 caliber pistol. It was found that the owner of the pistol 18 year old Kyle Noah Hendrix of Brookings was showing the pistol to the 20 year old victim when it accidentally discharged. The 20 year old victim was transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Brookings Ambulance, where he was later airlifted to a Sioux Falls Hospital. 18 year old Kyle Noah Hendrix was arrested and charged with reckless discharge of a firearm.

It was found that a 2005 Dodge Durango was parked on the street in the 100 blk of Brody Ave. in Volga. It is believed to have occurred sometime between Saturday, 03/24/18 at 2300 to when it was noticed on Sunday, 03/25/18 at 0830. The amount of damage is estimated at $3,000.00 to $4,000.00. It was found that someone attempted to drill into coin boxes at a business damaging the locks. On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a burglary to an unoccupied building. It was found that the building was unlocked and a Black & Decker lithium pole saw, 2 Husqvarna 51/55 chainsaws, and 1 cordless impact wrench were stolen. The theft is believed to have occurred sometime on Monday, 02/26/18, between the hours of 0600 to 1400. On the above date and time Aurora Fire Dept., Brookings Fire Dept. and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office were helping with traffic control on an injury accident on Hwy 14 near 475th Ave. that the South Dakota Hwy Patrol was investigating. While conducting traffic control a Semi Truck pulling a milk trailer driven by 45 year old Gregory Scott Kavanaugh was stopped near the intersection of Hwy 14 and 476th Ave. While stopped the milk trailer was struck by a 2016 Mazda passenger car driven by 64 year old Gary Alan Marshall. Gary was transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Brookings Ambulance with unknown injuries. Gary was later issued a citation for over driving road conditions. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Barn Fire

On the above date and time the White Fire Dept., White Ambulance, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a barn fire near the above location. The cause of the fire is believed to be electrical in nature. The 40x30 Horse Barn was a complete loss with an estimated cost of $10,000 to replace. The barn was empty with no livestock in it at the time of the fire. The fire is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a vehicle burglary. It was found that the passenger side window of a 2003 Pont. Grand Prix had been broken out and a black purse and a black wallet were stolen. An undisclosed amount of cash, social security cards, and other miscellaneous items were inside the purse and wallet. The theft is occurred between Wednesday, 02/14/18 at 2030 to when it was noticed on Thursday, 02/15/18 at 0725. The cost to replace the broken window is unknown at this time. . Gunshot wound

Location: 700 Blk of E. 1st St. (Volga, SD)

On the above date and time Deputies from the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, Volga First Responders, and Brookings Ambulance responded to a reported gunshot wound at the above location. It was found that 29 year old Christopher James Brown of Volga, SD had received a gunshot wound to his hand. Christopher was transported by the Brookings Ambulance to the Brookings Emergency Room where he was later transported by Ambulance to Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Christopher is facing charges of simple assault domestic, possession of a loaded firearm while intoxicated, and reckless discharge of a firearm.

Theft

Reported: Wednesday, 02/14/18 at 0800.
Location: 200 Blk Broadway. (Aurora, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a theft of tires from the 200 Blk of Broadway in Aurora, SD. Through investigation it was found that on Tuesday, 02/13/18 at around 0315 a suspect vehicle was caught on video near the business that it was stolen from. The suspect vehicle is possibly a 2010 or newer KIA SUV maroon in color. On this evening the suspect or suspects stole the spare tire off of a 2004 Jeep Liberty.
On Thursday, 02/14/18 at about 0330 the suspect or suspects returned in a late 90’s to early 2000 model Jeep Cherokee, or Jeep Loredo maroon in color. When this vehicle returns it appears to have the spare tire that was stolen on 02/13/18 on the passenger side rear of the vehicle. The suspect or suspects then steal the 4 other tires off of the victims 2004 Jeep Liberty. The five tires, wheels, and lug nuts are valued at $1,500.00.
