Auditor This office oversees the budgeting process, determines the tax levy, pays the bills for all county offices, handles the payroll process for county employees, and is in charge of most elections held in Brookings County.  The County Auditor is elected for a 4-year term.

Commission This 5-member board sets and administers the budget for all county departments.  They hire and set policy for county employees,  The Commission has the responsibility of building and caring for county buildings and for overseeing departments to ensure procedures are followed according to state law.  Commissioners  are elected for a 4-year term.

Community Health Nurses Brookings County provides clerical staff for this state office.

Emergency Management This office develops and maintains the county plan for reacting to emergencies.  They work with other government groups to develop this plan and assist in training others to respond to the emergency.  During an actual emergency the Director coordinates the action.  The Emergency Management Director is appointed by the County Commission.

Equalization This office has on record the values of all real estate property in Brookings County,  It is their duty to determine the value of this property so that the taxable value can be set-then the taxes can be determined by the County Auditor.  The Equalization Director is appointed by the County Commission.

Highway Department This office is responsible for maintenance and construction on all county roads and bridges, to include the purchasing and maintaining of all equipment for this purpose.  Brookings County maintains 220 bridges and 394 miles of county roads, 133 miles of gravel roads, and 261 miles of hard surfaces roads.  The Highway superintendent is appointed by the county commission.

Human Resources This office is responsible for the human resource activities of the county to include: recruitment, assisting with the interview process, developing employment practices to comply with applicable employment laws, personnel policy administration, updating of job descriptions, consulting on salary and benefits administration, plus other personnel duties as assigned by the Commission.

Register of Deeds This office keeps all the legal records concerning property in the county.  They also preserve marriage licenses, birth records, death records, burial records, and military records for Brookings County.  The Register of Deeds is elected for a 4-year term.

Sherriff The Sheriff is the law enforcement officer for the county and also an officer for the court.  This office arrests and detains offenders, serves legal papers for the court, and maintains and operates the Brookings County Detention Center.  The Sheriff is elected for a 4-year term.

States Attorney This office serves as the prosecutor for the state in criminal and civil cases and is also the legal advisor for the county. The States Attorney is elected for a 4-year term

Treasurer This office sells licenses for all motor vehicles and collects taxes.  The County Treasurer is elected for a 4-year term.

Veterans Service/Welfare This office acts as an advocate for veterans and their families when applying for benefits; they also take applications and screen people seeking assistance from the county to pay medical bills and living expenses and then makes recommendations for action to the Commission.  The Veterans Service/Welfare Director is appointed by the County Commission

Weed This office administers the spraying of noxious weeds.  The Weed & Pest Supervisor is appointed by the commission.

Zoning/Drainage This office takes applications for building permits and administers the county zoning ordinance; they also take applications for drainage permits and makes recommendations to the Commission for granting or denying the permits. The Zoning/Drainage Director is appointed by the County Commission.
