The Brookings County Board of County Commissioners met in regular session
on Tuesday, May 20, 2003, with the following members present: Emil Klavetter,
Deanna Santema, Dennis Falken, Donald Larson, and Mary Negstad. Also present:
Kelly Bakken, Stacy Steffensen, Cheryl Anderson, Lori Schultz, and Martin
Stanwick.
Chairperson Emil Klavetter called the meeting to order.
CONSENT AGENDA
Chairperson Emil Klavetter declared the Consent Agenda approved with
no objection from the board. The Consent Agenda consisted of the Agenda
for the May 20, 2003 Commission meeting, minutes from the May 13, 2003
Commission Meeting, the Welfare Matters, and the Travel/Education Requests.
Welfare Matters: Case # 03-003A for utilities was approved; Case # 03-024
for hospital was denied. Travel/Education Requests: Director
of Equalization, Joyce Dragseth to go to Omaha, NE on June 9-11, 2003 to
attend the NCRAAO Conference.
COMMISSION REPORTS
Commissioner Falken reported on the Spring Workshop, the Senior Center
Open House, and the Sioux Valley District Meeting. Commissioner Larson
reported on the Leadership Brookings Meeting. Commissioner Negstad
reported on the BATA Luncheon, the Spring Workshop, the Senior Center Open
House, the Ergonomics Workshop, and the Sioux Valley District Meeting.
Commissioner Santema reported on the Spring Workshop, the Weed Board Meeting,
the Ergonomics Workshop, East Central Mental Health Meeting, and the Sioux
Valley District Meeting. Commissioner Santema updated the board on
Zoning Matters. Commissioner Klavetter reported on the Planning and
Zoning Meeting, the Brookings Economic Development Corporation Meeting,
the Local Emergency Planning Committee Meeting, the Ergonomics Workshop,
Brookings City Council Meeting, and the Sioux Valley District Meeting.
Commissioner Klavetter updated the board on House Bill 1281.
OTHER MATTERS
Deputy Auditor, Kelly Bakken presented the board with the Auditors
Report. Bakken updated the board on the valuation and tax dollars
within the Hendricks School District 5-4. Be it noted, VeraSun Energy
Corporation has requested a name change on Resolution # 02-63.
Elections Officer, Stacy Steffensen presented the board with the Commission Assistant/Personnel Director Report. Steffensen updated the board on the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs Training Program, the NACO Conference, and the signage for the 2nd and 3rd floors of the Courthouse.
Cheryl Anderson and Lori Schultz met with the board to discuss the Courthouse Cookbook.
Sheriff, Martin Stanwick met with the board to inform them of
the Full Search in Brookings County for the missing aircraft.
COMMISSIONER’S OPEN DISCUSSION
Be it noted, the board discussed the parking lot at the 1921
Building, the Juvenile Electronic Monitoring Reimbursement Program, House
Bill 1281, and the Rail Road Crossing in Aurora, SD.
ADJOURNMENT
The Chair declared the meeting adjourned until 8:30am Tuesday,
May 27, 2003.
