1. Who can join 4-H?

Brookings County 4-H membership is open to all boys and girls ages 8-18. There are Cloverbud programs for boys and girls ages 5-8. 4-H is open to all youth regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age, or handicap.

2. What's expected of a 4-H member?

When you join 4-H, you are expected to attend your club's meetings and enroll in at least one 4-H project. Every 4-H member prepares a project or demonstration to exhibit at Achievement Days or a club meeting. Throughout the year, 4-H members complete a record book to record their activities for the year and submits it to their club leader for possible rewards.

3. How much does it cost?

4-H is free! 4-H clubs may have small dues to pay for their activities. Other activities may have a fee to pay for things like food, transportation, etc.

4. What is a 4-H project?

A project is an area or interest that the 4-H member wants to learn more about during the year. All members get project materials that will get them started and a leader is usually available to help members with their project work.

5. How can parents become involved in 4-H?

Parents are a very important part of 4-H. Parents help 4-H members choose their project, provide transportation and encourage the 4-H'er to do their best. Many parents share their time, skills and resources with the entire 4-H club by becoming project or club leaders. For these activities the leader invites members into their home or meeting place and work on projects or have club meetings.

6. We live in the city, can my kids still join 4-H?

4-H programs are open to all young people, no matter where they live. There are programs in every community in Brookings County. Some projects that are especially well suited to urban areas include drama, pets, food and nutrition, gardening and rocketry.
