K-9 Unit
Police Service Dog (PSD) Buddy
PSD Buddy joined the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office in April 2012. PSD Buddy and Deputy Shawn Hostler trained for six weeks under Lieutenant Scott Sheldon, from the South Dakota Highway Patrol. PSD Buddy is a single purpose Narcotic Detector Dog certified in several odors, including Marijuana, Cocaine, and MDMA (Ecstasy), just to name a few.

Around the County
Brookings County is fortunate to have a canine in the area. Surrounding agencies call on PSD Buddy quite frequently to assist with searches. PSD Buddy has preformed searches for the Brookings Police Department, South Dakota Highway Patrol, Court Services, South Dakota State University Police Department, Moody County Sheriff’s Office, Kingsbury County Sheriff’s Office, Lake County Sheriff’s Office, and the South Dakota Department of Corrections.

PSD Buddy and Deputy Hostler are also actively involved with the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation on many narcotic investigations and searches. PSD Buddy has also performed and assisted with school searches in Brookings, White, Volga, Arlington, Lake Preston, DeSmet, Iroquois, Flandreau, Madison, Rutland, Colman, and Flandreau Indian School.
