“To Make the Best Better” is the motto for 4-H across the nation and 4-H in Brookings County is no different. Brookings County 4-H promotes the idea: “learn by doing” and provides leadership and life skills education for youth ages 5-18. Youth ages 5 to 7 are welcomed to participate in Cloverbud activities; which provide a sneak peek to the traditional 4-H program through hands-on activities and lessons highlighting 4-H project areas. Youth ages 8 to 18 (by January 1 of the current year), may enroll in 4-H to participate in limitless activities and projects available throughout the year. There are 8 traditional 4-H clubs located throughout the county; each offering unique opportunities, activities and experiences. Additionally, we have 3 special interest groups which focus on specific project areas including: Dog Club, Robotics & S.T.E.A.M., and 4-H Shooting Sports.

The 4-H calendar runs from October 1 – September 30 of each year. Enrollment can be submitted online each year through 4-HOnline. Monthly activities are highlighted in our ‘Brookings County 4-H Times’ newsletter. Culminating events generally take place in June, July and August which showcase the achievements of 4-H members through their participation in Youth-in-Action Events, Horse Show, Dog Show, and finally Achievement Days.

The county office is located in the Brookings County Outdoor Adventure Center at 2810 22nd Avenue South, Suite 2 in Brookings. 4-H programming in Brookings County is a part of South Dakota State University and SDSU Extension.
