Burglary

Location: 100 Blk of S. Broadway. (Aurora, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report burglary at the Ag First Co-op in Aurora. It was found that a suspect or suspects broke a door off of its hinges and entered the north side of the building. An undisclosed amount of cash was stolen from inside of the building. The incident happened sometime between Wednesday, 09/16/20 to Thursday, 09/17/20. Location: Cornell Ave. and North Dr. (Elkton, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office and Elkton Fire Dept. responded to a 1994 Nissan Maxima car that was on fire. The Elkton Fire Dept. extinguished the fire. The fire was believed to be electrical in nature. The vehicle was a complete loss. No injuries were reported.

Burglary

Reported: Monday, 09/21/20 @ 1025
Location: 3500 Main Ave. S. (Brookings, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to Dakota Mini Storage just south of Brookings for a report of several storage units that had their locks cut off of them. Upon arrival it was found that several of the locks had been cut off of several sheds with what is believed to be a bolt cutter. The burglaries are believed to have happened sometime between Friday, 09/18/20 to when they were found on Monday, 09/21/20. The amount of property stolen is unknown at this time. Injury accident

Vehicle: 2008 Harley Davidson FLHX Damage: $2,500.00

On the above date and time the Brookings Fire Dept., Brookings Ambulance, Brookings Police Dept., South Dakota Hwy Patrol, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a motorcycle accident at the above location. It was found that the above motorcycle was traveling west and a deer entered the roadway from the south ditch. The driver swerved to avoid hitting the deer and lost control of the motorcycle and tipped it over. The driver and passenger were transported by the Brookings Ambulance to the Brookings Hospital then onto a Sioux Falls Hospital with unknown injuries. The driver and passenger were not wearing helmets. The motorcycle received some $2,500.00 worth of damage. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Missing or stolen dog

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a missing 2 ½ year old
male Shih Tzu dog that is 11 to 12 pounds and gold in color. The dog went missing on Sunday, 09/13/20
at 0900 and was last seen running toward the road from the residence. The dog is valued at $1,500.00.

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a 16 foot enclosed
single axle trailer, white in color that was stolen from the above location. There is no license on the trailer
owned by a company out of Minnesota whom the reporting party works for and Minnesota does not
require that trailers be licensed. The theft of the trailer occurred sometime between Saturday, 08/22/20 at

style electric children’s power wheel toy. The toy was stolen from in front of the garage at the residence.

Stolen Firearm

Location: 1800 blk of 16th Ave. W. (Rural Brookings, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a stolen hand gun. The gun was left in an unlocked vehicle parked at his residence. The stolen gun was a 9mm Glock 19 pistol, equipped with Ameriglo front sights and factory stock sights on the back. The firearm was in a Glock case with three additional magazines. The theft occurred sometime between August 17th, 2020 to Monday, 09/07/20. On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took reports of vehicles that were left unlocked and entered. One vehicle had an undisclosed amount of cash stolen from it. The incident is believed to have happened on Tuesday, 09/08/20 in the early morning hours between 0200 to when it was noticed at 0800. The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office is asking residents to remember to roll your windows up, take your keys out of your vehicles, and lock them up when you park them. Location: 1369 110th Ave. (Elkton, SD)

On the above date and time an employee of B&H Contractors reported the theft of 6 LED lights from a John Deer 644 Pay-loader. A suspect vehicle was caught on video footage entering the property on Sunday, 08/23/20 at around 0130. The footage was of a 4 door passenger car. The make, model, color, and license plate is unknown. The cost to replace the 6 LED lights is estimated at $3,900.00. On the above date and time the Hendricks Ambulance, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 4 wheeler accident at the above location. It was found that the driver 60 year old Kevin Doyle Olson was operating the 4 wheeler and was traveling west on 200th St. and entered the north ditch to check the fence. The grass was tall in the ditch and he drove into a hole, which caused the 4 wheeler to tip and land on top of the driver. 60 year old Kevin Doyle Olson was transported by the Hendricks Ambulance to the Hendricks Hospital with unknown injuries. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Storm Damage

Friday, 08/28/20 @ 0200hrs

On the above date and time a severe thunderstorm producing high winds and hail made its way across Brookings County. The Northern part of Brookings County was hit hardest by the storm. Trees and branches were reported down in the Oakwood Lake area. Trees were reported down blocking roadways north of White. The City of White and City of Bruce had several trees and branches down along with other debris scattered around. Power lines were down on the north side of Bruce and the city was without power. There were no injuries reported at this time. Brookings County Hwy responded and removed trees from roadways. City employees from White and Bruce removed trees and branches from the city streets in their respective cities.

On the above date and time the Elkton Fire Dept., Elkton Ambulance, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a one vehicle rollover accident at the above location. Upon arrival at the scene no one was located and a search of the area was conducted by the Elkton Fire Dept. and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office. A short time after the search started dispatch was notified by the Brookings Hospital Emergency Room advised that the three above individuals had been brought to the Brookings Hospital Emergency Room by a private party. It was found that the vehicle was traveling westbound on Hwy 13. The driver lost control of the vehicle and it entered the north ditch and rolled. It was later discovered that the driver Jose Jiminez Munguia and the front seat passenger Yoni Alvarado were wearing their seatbelts, but the back seat passenger Nison Adonal Lopez was not. Lopez was found to have been ejected from the vehicle. All three were treated at the Emergency Room for unknown injuries. The rear passenger Nilson Adonal Lopez was later transported to a Sioux Falls Hospital. The driver Jose Jiminez Mungula is facing charges of no valid driver’s license. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

On the above date and time the Brookings Fire Dept., Brookings Ambulance, Brookings Police Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two vehicle injury accident at the above location. It was found that a 2010 Ford F150 driven by 22 year old Brayden Kane Thomas was traveling southbound on I29 just north of MM132 when it struck the guard rail cable and became disabled and partly in the right lane of travel without any headlights or hazard lights on. A 2018 Ford F150 driven by 50 year old Mark Daniel Olson was traveling southbound in the right lane and struck the 2010 Ford F150 that was parked partly in the driving lane. The 2018 Ford 150 then entered the west ditch and rolled. 50 year old Mark Daniel Olson was transported by Ambulance to the Brookings Hospital and then transferred to a Sioux Falls Hospital. 22 year old Brayden Lane Thomas was found to have consumed alcoholic beverages, which was found to be a contributing factor to the accident. Brayden is facing charges of DUI, careless driving, and operating a vehicle without headlights.

On the above date and time the Brookings Ambulance, Brookings Fire Dept., Brookings Police Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a one vehicle injury accident at the above location. It was found that 18 year old Misha May Pickard was traveling northbound in a 2002 Oldsmobile Bravada when the vehicle entered the east ditch and struck a field approach and vaulted landing on its wheels. The driver Masha May Pickard, and passenger Julian Rae Weishaar were transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Brookings Ambulance with unknown injuries. Julian Weishaar was later airlifted to a hospital in Sioux Falls. The other passenger Jordon Laplante was transported by a private party to the Brookings Hospital with unknown injuries. Seatbelt use is unknown at this time. Alcohol was a factor and the driver Misha May Pickard is facing charges of DUI 1st, underage consumption of an alcoholic beverage, vehicular battery, reckless driving, and open alcoholic container in a motor vehicle. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Structure fire

Location: 46674 217th street

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office along with Volga Fire Department, Brookings Fire Department and Sinai Fire Department responded to a structure fire at the above location. It was found that a couple old unoccupied buildings had started on fire due to trash being burnt at some point in a nearby pit. The owner of the property didn’t believe any items of value were lost in the fire. The incident is under investigation by the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Vandalism

Reported: Wednesday, 08/12/20 @ 0800

Location: Iron Bridge over the Sioux River west of Brookings on 215th St. between 469th Ave. and 468th Ave.
On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of vandalism to a bridge at the above location. It was found that a suspect or suspects had painted graffiti on the bridge and started a fire in the middle of the bridge, which is constructed with wood planks. The fire damage was minimal and the incident happened sometime between Tuesday, 08/11/20 at 0800 to when it was found on Wednesday, 08/12/20 at 0800. The graffiti was found the prior week. Vehicle fire

Location: 47360 197th St. (Toronto, SD)

On the above date and time the Toronto Fire Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a vehicle that was on fire at the above location. It was found that the owner of the 2012 Chevy Silverado pickup parked the vehicle in the yard away from a shed he was working in. The owner stated about 10 minutes later he noticed smoke coming out of the driver’s side window that was rolled down. He then called 911 and the Toronto Fire Dept. responded and extinguished the fire. The vehicle was a complete loss. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

Cattle Shot

Reported: 8/4/20 @ 0940hrs
Location: A pasture near 207th street and 467th Ave.

On the above date and time deputies were dispatched to the above location for a report of cattle being shot. Three Charolais cows and a Charlolais calf had been shot. Two cows and the calf were killed and the other cow wounded. The incident happed sometime between 1900hrs on 8/3/20 and 0940hrs on 8/4/20. The cows are valued at $3000 each and the calf at $1000. The incident is under investigation with the Sheriff’s Office.

Unit 1: 2009 Chevy Malibu Damage: Total loss

Unit 2: 2019 International straight truck Damage: Total loss.

On the above date and time the Aurora Fire Dept., Brookings Ambulance, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two vehicle injury accident at the intersection of Hwy 14 and 478th Ave. It was found that the 2009 Chevy Malibu driven by 18 year old Amy Charging was traveling south on 478th Ave. and did not stop for the stop sign at the intersection of Hwy 14. The Chevy Malibu then collided with a 2019 International straight truck driven by 43 year old Dienye Andrew-Jaja. Amy Charging was transported to the Brookings Hospital by ambulance and later transported by ambulance to a Sioux Falls Hospital with unknown injuries. The passenger in Unit 1’s vehicle was airlifted to a Sioux Falls Hospital with unknown injuries. The driver of unit 2 Dienye Andrew-Jaja was transported by ambulance to the Brookings Hospital with unknown injuries. The driver Amy charging is facing charges of a stop sign violation, DUI, vehicular battery, zero tolerance, possession of a controlled substance, ingestion of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and a seat belt violation. The driver of unit 2 and the passenger of unit 1 were wearing their seatbelts. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Location: Center console of Dodge Ram pick-up.

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a 1911 Smith and Wesson 45 automatic pistol with two fully loaded magazines that was stolen from the center console of a Dodge Ram truck sometime between March 1st, 2020 to July 25th, 2020. The vehicle had been driven to multiple different locations during this time period. The value of the pistol, magazines, and ammunition is $1,000.00. It was found that 18 year old Curt Homola was traveling westbound on 207th St. east of 471st Ave., when the vehicle went off the roadway into the north ditch, struck a field approach and rolled. Curt was transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Brookings Ambulance with unknown injuries. Curt was wearing a seatbelt. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Hit and Run

Reported: Monday, 07/27/20 @ 0930
Location: 485th Ave. ½ N. of 199th St.

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a hit and run accident where an electrical pole owned by HD Electric had been struck and knocked down at the above location. It was found that an unknown suspect vehicle believed to be a pick-up was traveling south and entered the east ditch where it struck the electrical pole. The vehicle then entered a corn field and then came back up onto the roadway and went across the road and west ditch and into a rye field and then came back up onto the roadway. The damage to the corn field and rye field is unknown at this time. The electrical pole had to be replaced and the cost to replace it is estimated at $2,000.00. Hit and Run

Location: Meadow Creek Golf Course (Volga, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a hit and run to a 2008 Chevy Silverado Pick Up, that was believed to have taken place at the Meadow Creek Golf Course parking lot in Volga, SD. The hit and run is believed to have happened sometime between Thursday, 07/16/20 at 1700 to Thursday, 07/16/20 at 2200. The victim’s vehicle received damage to the driver’s side rear of the vehicle and is estimated at $4,000.00. Burglary

Location: 21643 471st Ave. (Rural Brookings, SD) 

On the above date and time a rural Brookings resident reported that their home was burglarized sometime between 11/01/19 to 07/12/20. The owner advised that they had left the home in early November, 2019 and returned on July 12th, 2020 and found that a suspect or suspects entered the home and stole several items. The following items were stolen Harmonicas, a scale, video games, and a Daisy air rifle. There appeared to be no sign of forced entry. The total value of the items stolen was $700.00. On the above date and time the Brookings Fire Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a tractor fire at the above location. It was found that a 1950 Ford 8N tractor valued at $3,000.00 had caught on fire. The fire was extinguished by the Brookings Fire Dept. and the tractor was a total loss. The fire is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Injury accident

Reported: Thursday, 07/09/20 @ 1253
Location: 478th Ave. ½ N. of Hwy 14 (Bushnell, SD)

Injured driver: Jeffrey Paul Weber Age: 54
Elkton, SD
Vehicle: 2015 International Semi-Truck, & 2016 grain trailer Damage: $45,000

On the above date and time the Aurora Fire Dept., Brookings Ambulance, and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a semi-truck rollover accident at the above location. It was found that the driver of the semi-truck, 54 year old Jeffrey Paul Weber was traveling south on 478th Ave. about a ½ mile north of Hwy 14, when the semi-truck drifted over onto the west shoulder of the road. The driver attempted to pull the vehicle back onto the roadway and the trailer tires entered the west ditch, which pulled the tractor into the ditch where it rolled over onto its side. Weber was transported by the Brookings Ambulance to the Brookings Hospital Emergency Room with unknown injuries. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

On the above date and time a Volga resident reported damage to the hood of their Charbroil grill and two grates stolen from the grill. It was found that the suspect or suspects entered the back yard through a 4 foot tall chain link fence and onto the back deck where the grill is kept. The incident occurred sometime between Wednesday, 06/24/20 in the evening until it was noticed on Wednesday, 07/01/20. The cost to repair the grill and replace the grates is estimated at $90.00. Location: Lake Poinsett State Park Boat Ramp

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a theft of a transducer off a boat for a Lowrance HDS 9 depth finder. The theft occurred on Sunday, 06/28/20 between the hours of 1930 to 2000 as the boat and trailer were briefly parked at the boat landing. When the owner of the boat returned he noticed that someone had cut the cable and removed the transducer. The cost of the transducer is $500.00. Video Lottery Burglary.

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of video lottery machines broken into at the Valleymart located at 101 Caspian Ave. in Volga, SD. It was found that a suspect had broken into two video lottery machines and stole and undisclosed amount of cash. A suspect was later located at the Pump N Pack at Main Ave. S. and 12th St. S. in Brookings, SD. 40 year old Jeremy Novak was taken into custody by the South Dakota DCI and charged with Petty Theft. The agency’s involved were the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, South Dakota Division Of Criminal Investigation and the Brookings Police Dept.

It was found that a suspect or suspects had broken all of the windows out of an abandoned farm place that the owner had been in the process of remodeling. The suspect or suspects had also stolen several misc. items from inside of the home. The incident occurred sometime between Friday, 05/15/20 at 1400 to when it was reported on Wednesday, 06/17/20 at 1015. The cost to replace the windows is estimated at $5,500.00. On the above date and time the Aurora Fire Dept., Brookings Ambulance, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to an injury accident involving a van and a deer. It was found that the driver Cary Wadsworth was travelling eastbound on Hwy 14 when the deer entered the roadway from a shelterbelt on the south side of the road. The vehicle collided with the deer, causing extensive damage to the vehicle. 42 year old Cary Wadsworth was transported to the Brookings Hospital with unknown injuries. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

On Friday, 06/12/20 the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office completed compliance checks of local businesses in Brookings County. A total of 10 businesses were checked and 1 business failed the compliance check and sold alcohol to a 19 year old buyer. The business that failed was the Elkton Municipal Lounge. During the previous compliance check in June of 2019 two businesses made sales to the underage buyer.

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of 5 to 8 foundation blocks that were stolen from a driveway of a Volga residence. The blocks are owned by Telkamp House Moving Inc. It was found that a neighbor saw a male subject approx.. 45 years of age with grey hair, driving a 1990 Ford Explorer orange in color with a lot of rust on the vehicle take the blocks. The theft occurred sometime between 0900 to 1000 hours on Sunday, 06/14/20. The value of the blocks is unknown at this time. On the above date and time the Sinai Fire Dept., Volga Fire Dept., Arlington Fire Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a Ready Mix Cement truck that had drove past the above intersection into a low area with water on both sides of the road. The gravel roadway became soft and the driver lost control of the vehicle where it entered the water and rolled. The driver was transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Arlington Ambulance with unknown injuries. The vehicle was a complete loss. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

On the above date and time the Arlington Fire Dept., Lake Preston Fire Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a tractor that was on fire near the above location. The owner of the fire advised that he smelt what he thought to be burning electrical wires and exited the tractor to see where the smell was coming from. When he getting back into the tractor he found the center counsel on fire. The tractor was a complete loss and was valued at $35,000.00.

Attempted break in.
