Farm Accident

Location: Rural Elkton, SD

On the above date and time the Brookings Ambulance and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to an accident where 20 year old Tristin Kuehn from Brookings, SD had fallen through a skylight while removing snow from the roof of a machine shed. Tristin was transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Brookings Ambulance with unknown injuries. He was later airlifted to Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD

On the above date and time the Elkton Ambulance, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 2 vehicle crash at the intersection of Elk St. and 5th Ave. in Elkton, SD. It was found that 30 year old Shannon Aguilar was traveling north on Elk St. in her 2015 Chevy Cruze. 15 year old Ashleigh Rodriguez was traveling west on 5th St. in a 2015 Chevy Spark and had stopped at the stop sign. She advised that due to the high snowbanks at the intersection she didn’t see the other vehicle and proceeded into the intersection, where the two vehicles collided. Shannon Aguilar was transported by ambulance to the Brookings Hospital with unknown injuries by the Elkton Ambulance. Ashleigh Rodriguez and the 15 year old passenger Isabella Rodriguez were transported to the Brookings Hospital in a private vehicle with unknown injuries. Ashleigh was issued a citation for a stop sign violation. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Hit and Run

Reported: Saturday, March 2nd, 2019
Location: 300 Blk of Buffalo St. in Elkton, SD

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a hit and run accident at the above location. It was found that a gray 2007 Chrysler Aspen was parked in front of the residence on the street and was struck on the driver’s side front fender, and front door, by an unknown vehicle. The unknown vehicle left red taillight fragments from its vehicle at the scene. The accident happened sometime between Friday, March 1st 2019 at 2130 to when it was noticed on Saturday, March 2nd, 2019 at 0950. The damage to the victim’s vehicle is estimated at $3,000.00. Stolen vehicle, DUI, narcotics arrest.

Reported: Wednesday, 02/27/19 @ 0655.
Location: I29 Southbound 1 north of Brookings.

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a non-injury accident on I29 southbound just north of Brookings. It was found that 20 year old Oliver Alexander Bracey from New Mexico was traveling southbound in a 2018 Hyundia Accent when he went into the west ditch and struck a snow bank that caused extensive damage to the front of the vehicle. The vehicle was found to be stolen out of New Mexico, and had substitute plates on the vehicle. There was also a small amount of methamphetamine, and marijuana found in the vehicle and on his person. Oliver was also found to be under the influence of narcotics as well. Oliver was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, ingesting a toxic substance, DUI 1st, possession of stolen property, no insurance, substitute plates, and expired license plates. He is currently being held at the Brookings County Detention Center on a $5,000 cash bond.

Theft

Reported: Wednesday, 02/27/19 at 0630
Location: 700 Blk E. 5th St. in Volga, SD

On the above date and time a Volga resident reported the theft of a small black rechargeable flashlight, a black Vortex 10x50 binoculars with a camo pattern harness that has a leather center on the back. They were stolen from his 2016 black Chevy pickup sometime on Tuesday, 02/26/19 from 1730 to when it was noticed this morning, Wednesday, 02/27/19 around 0615. The victim advised that he had been at the Sioux Valley School Parking lot, Caseys in Volga, and had parked the vehicle in his driveway. He advised that he thought he had locked the truck everywhere except when he was at Caseys. There was no forced entry into the truck. The value of the items that were stolen was $440.00. Fire

Reported: Friday, 02/22/19 @ 0735
Location: Near 218th ST. and 474th Ave.

On the above date and time the Aurora Fire Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the above location for a barn fire. Aurora Fire Dept. requested assistance and several other Fire Departments within the county responded including ambulance services. The fire was eventually extinguished. The barn was a complete loss. A skidsteer, 2 lawn mowers, about 250 to 300 square bales of straw, and 63 head of sheep were also lost in the fire. The cause of the fire is unknown and is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Theft

Location: 500 Blk 1st St. in Volga, SD

On the above date and time a Volga resident reported the theft of a box that was delivered to the front steps of their residence on Thursday, February 14th at 1405 hours. The box contained Disney memorabilia from California and was valued at $80.00. Stolen Hand Gun

Reported: Sunday, 02/17/19 at 1825.
Location: Rural Bruce residence.

On the above date and time a rural Bruce resident reported the theft of a 9mm Smith and Wesson Model FD9 VE pistol that is black with a chrome slide. The pistol is valued at $250.00. The pistol was stolen from a locked shed at a rural Bruce residence. There was no sign of forced entry into the shed. The theft is believed to have occurred sometime between sometime in December of 2018 to when it was noticed on Saturday, 02/16/19. On the above date and time the Volga Fire Dept., Brookings Ambulance, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a one vehicle injury accident at the above location. It was found that 29 year old Jordan Miller was traveling south on 466th Ave. and did not see the stop sign at the intersection of Hwy 14. The vehicle went through the intersection, where it vaulted and landed in the south ditch. The driver was transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Brookings Ambulance with unknown injuries. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Stolen Vehicle

On the above date and time the Elkton Fire Dept., Elkton Ambulance, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a vehicle rollover at the above location. It was found that 20 year old Tristan Bergmann was traveling west on Hwy 14 and lost control of the vehicle due to the slippery road conditions. The vehicle entered the north ditch were it rolled. Tristan was transported to the Brookings Hospital with unknown injuries by the Elkton Ambulance. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Fire

Reported: Sunday, 01/13/19 @ 1509
Location: Rural White, SD.

On the above date and time the White Fire Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a Bobcat Skid Steer that was on fire at a rural White residence. It was found that the owner had plugged the Skid Steer in to warm it up before using it. The owner advised that a short time later he noticed fire coming from the back of the Bobcat. Once the White Fire Dept. arrived they extinguished the fire. The Skid Steer received some $12,000.00 worth of damage. The fire is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Hit and Run

Reported: Thursday, 12/27/18 @ 1230
Location 200 Blk of E. Hwy 14, Volga, SD

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a hit and run accident that happened sometime between Wednesday, 12/26/18 at 1700 to when it was noticed on Thursday, 12/27/18. It was found that the 2003 Honda Pilot had been parked at a residence and was struck by another vehicle causing some $800 worth of damage to the front driver side of the vehicle. Fire

Reported: Friday, 12/28/18 @ 1125
Location: Rural Arlington, SD

On the above date and time the Arlington Fire Dept., Arlington Ambulance, Bruce Fire Dept., and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a tractor that was on fire. The fire was extinguished by the Arlington Fire Dept., but the John Deer Model 7400 was a total loss and estimated at $56,000.00. It was found the owner had pulled the tractor into a shed as a joy stick had frozen up on it. The owner put a portable propane heater on it and left for approx. 5 minutes and returned and found the tractor on fire. The tractor was pulled out of the shed while it was on fire to avoid the shed starting on fire. The fire is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

On the above date and time at the above location the Elkton Ambulance, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a roll-over accident. It was found that 48 year old Patrick Dirckx was traveling south on Hwy 13 and lost control of the vehicle on the slippery road conditions on the curve on the west side of Elkton. The vehicle entered the east ditch where it rolled. Patrick was taken by ambulance to the Brookings Hospital with unknown injuries. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Vehicle: 2006 Nissan Ultima Damage total Loss

The vehicle was eastbound on 206th St. As it was nearing the intersection of 461st Ave, it began to lose control on the washboards in the road. The road was also icy at the time and the driver was unable to regain control of the vehicle. The vehicle entered the south ditch where it rolled onto its top. The driver was taken by private party to the Brookings Hospital to be treated for unknown injuries.

Vehicle 1 was stopped at the stop sign at 458th Ave. and HWY 14. The driver stated he looked both directions and couldn’t see anyone coming in the dense fog at the time. Vehicle 1 began to turn westbound onto HWY 14. As vehicle 1 made the turn onto HWY 14, vehicle 2, a 2006 Dodge Ram Pickup, was traveling west on HWY 14 approaching the intersection the intersection with 458th Ave. Vehicle 2 was unable to see vehicle 1 while it was turning due to the fog. Vehicle 2 then collided with the trailer of vehicle 1. Driver of vehicle 2 was transported to the Brookings Hospital by private party to be treated for unknown injuries.

On the above date and time Elkton Fire Dept., Elkton Ambulance, Brookings Ambulance, South Dakota Hwy Patrol, and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a SUV that was struck by a train at the above location. It was found that the 2010 Jeep Patriot was traveling south at the above location, when it failed to yield to the train. The vehicle was then struck by the train which was traveling east. The vehicle then entered the east ditch. The driver 41 year old Silveria Felix-Molina was transported to Avera McKennen Hospital in Sioux Falls with unknown injuries. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Theft

Location: 21585 458th Ave. Volga

On the above date and time a rural Volga resident reported a theft of a Powerhorse Portable Inverter Generator from a building at the above location. The generator is blue and black in color and 2,000 surge watts. The generator was stolen sometime between 8-1-18 and 12-1-18. The value of the generator is $600.

Accident ( Hit & Run )

Reported: 11/26/18 @ 0700
Location: I-29 milepost 135
Vehicle: 1971 Chevy Pickup orange in color. Damage $900.00

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a hit and run accident at the above location. It was found that the driver of the above vehicle was traveling northbound and observed a dark colored Chevy Pickup rapidly approaching from the rear. As the dark Chevy pickup went into the passing lane the driver lost control of the vehicle. The dark Chevy pickup’s passenger side then collided with the front driver’s side fender of his vehicle. The orange Chevy went into the east ditch, and the black Chevy pickup went into median. The black Chevy then left the scene heading northbound on I29. The Sheriff’s Office is currently trying to identify the black Chevy pickup, which should have damage to the passenger side of the vehicle, along with orange paint transfer. Theft

Reported: 11/05/18 @ 1415
Location: 20th St. S. and 34th Ave. S.

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a theft at a Bowes Construction site. It was found that the gate was locked and the lock had been broke. Stolen was 22 machinery cords comprised of copper, with a value of approx. $25,000.00. The suspect vehicle is believed to be blue in color as there were pieces of a vehicle at the scene. The theft is believed to have happened sometime between Friday, 11/02/18 at 2100 to when it was noticed on Sunday, 11/04/18 at 1200.
