Fire

Reported: 05/20/19 @ 1420
Location: Hwy 14 and 209th St. (Arlington, SD)

On the above date and time Arlington Fire Dept., Lake Preston Fire Dept., Kingsbury County Sheriff’s Office, and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a corn pile on fire. The corn pile is owned by Prairie Ag Partners. It was found that the main station tower and pile of corn beneath it was on fire. The Fire Departments were able to extinguish the fire. The cause of the fire is believed to be caused by the moisture and heat in the pile of corn. The tower is believed to be undamaged but will require and inspection. The corn that was lost is believed to be valued at $40,000.00.

Drug arrest

Reported: Saturday, 05/18/19 @ 0737
Location: 455th Ave. near 197th St. (Arlington, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, assisted by the South Dakota Hwy Patrol, and Kingsbury County Sheriff’s Office responded to a vehicle in the ditch with two male subjects that appeared impaired and had a rifle in the vehicle. Upon arrival the parties in the vehicle would not follow directions from Law Enforcement. The driver eventually complied and exited the vehicle. 33 year old Richard Tuve of Sioux Falls, SD was found to be under the influence of a narcotic and in possession of a loaded firearm. He was taken into custody and arrested for DUI, possession of a controlled substance, ingesting a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a loaded firearm while intoxicated, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was also arrested on two outstanding warrants. The passenger of the vehicle was evaluated by the Arlington Ambulance and then released.

Vandalism

Reported: Saturday, 05/18/19 @ 1700
Location: 200 Blk of Broadway St. (Aurora, SD)

On the above date and time an Aurora, SD resident reported that someone broke the front windshield of their 1996 Ford F350F Motor Home that was parked near their residence. It appeared that the suspect or suspects struck the windshield with a hammer causing it to crack. The vandalism occurred sometime between Thursday, 05/16/19 at 2000 to when it was noticed on Friday, 05/17/19 at 1200. The cost to replace the windshield is unknown at this time. Fire

Reported: Sunday, 05/19/19 @ 0430
Location: 600 Blk of Antelope St. S. (Elkton, SD)

On the above date and time the Elkton Fire Dept., Aurora Fire Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residential fire at the above location. It was found that the owners of the home had parked their 2003 Ford Escape in their garage, which is attached to their home at around 2130 on 05/18/19. They advised that they awoke to smoke in their home around 0430. They opened the door to the garage and observed heavy smoke and flames coming from underneath the vehicle. Elkton Fire Dept. and Aurora Fire Dept. were able to extinguish the fire. The vehicle, and garage were a total loss. The home received smoke damage and the owner estimated the damage to be at least $50,000.00. The fire is under investigation with the Elkton Fire Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

On the above date and time Volga First Responders, Brookings Ambulance, and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two vehicle injury accident at the above location. It was found that 16 year old Evan Rathbun was traveling southbound on Marvin Ave. and did not yield for the yield sign at 3rd St and proceeded into the intersection. The 2000 Pontiac Sunfire Evan was driving was then struck by a 2006 Chevy Trail Blazer that was traveling eastbound on 3rd St and was driven by 46 year old Lisa Skovlund. Evan Rathbun was transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Brookings Ambulance with unknown injuries. Evan Rathbun was charged with failure to yield right of way at an intersection. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Vandalism

Location: Volga City Auditorium (Volga, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a vandalism at the above location. It was found that several windows had been broken out with a baseball and a brick, which were located at the scene both outside and inside of the Auditorium. The vandalism is believed to have happened sometime between Friday, 05/03/19 at 1900 to when it was found on Monday, 05/06/19 at around 1845. The cost to replace the windows is unknown at this time. On the above date and time Aurora First Responders, Brookings Ambulance, Brookings Police Dept., and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two vehicle injury accident at the above location. It was found that Unit 1 was traveling east on Hwy 14. Unit 2 was traveling north on 476th Ave. and had stopped at the intersection of Hwy 14 and 476th Ave. Driver of unit 2 stated he did not see unit 1 and pulled into the intersection as he was turning west onto Hwy 14. The two vehicle collided in the intersection. There were 5 passengers in unit 1 and the above two passengers were transported by ambulance to the Brookings hospital with unknown injuries. Driver of unit 1 Roger Jenniges was issued a citation for an expired driver’s license. Driver of unit 2 Kienan O’Connel was issued a citation for a stop sign violation. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Stolen calf

Location: 600 blk of W. 44th St. S. (Rural Brookings, SD)

On the above date and time a rural Brookings resident reported the theft of a small black calf with a green ear tag. The owner said he went back to the feeding area of the pen and noticed one calf was missing. The owner advised that the theft occurred sometime on Friday, 04/26/19 at 1000 to when he noticed the calf missing at 1800. The owner advised that he did notice a white pickup truck driving in the area that he did not recognize. Fire

Reported: Monday, 04/29/19 at 0710
Location: 46537 214th St. (Volga, SD)

On the above date and time the Volga Fire Dept., Brookings Ambulance, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a shed that was on fire at the above location. It was found that the fire originated in a 2000 Peterbilt Semi Truck that was parked in the shed. There was also a 2018 GMC Denali pick up, a 2005 Outback 5th wheel camper, a 300 International tractor and loader, and a 320 John Deer Farmhand that was parked in the shed and received extensive damage. The total estimated damage to the shed, and vehicles is around $270,000.00. The fire appeared to have originated in the engine compartment of the Semi Truck, but what started the fire is unknown at this time. The fire is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Vehicle fire

Reported: Saturday, 04/20/19 @ 1200
Location: Rural Aurora, SD.

On the above date and time the Aurora Fire Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 1984 Freightliner Semi Tow Truck that was on fire in the Aurora Auto Body Impound lot. The truck had been started and was running and the owner had left for a short time and when he returned he found that it was on fire. He attempted to put it out with fire extinguishers but was unsuccessful. The Aurora Fire Dept. was dispatched and extinguished the fire. The vehicle was a total loss and valued at $40,000.00. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Burglary

Reported: Thursday, 04/18/19 @ 1315
Location: 48152 Hwy 13 (Elkton, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a theft of power tools stolen from Crosswinds Dairy near Elkton, SD. It was found that the theft occurred on Wednesday, 04/17/19 between 2117 to 2154. Video of a suspect that is believed to be a Hispanic Male enter the building where the tools were stolen from. The value of the power tools is unknown at this time.

The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office also took a report of a theft at Hilltop Dairy (Rural Elkton, SD). This theft is believed to have occurred on Wednesday, 04/17/19 at around 0230. Several tools were stolen from the shop. The same suspect is believed to have committed this burglary as well. On the above date and time the Arlington Fire Dept., Bruce Fire Dept., Arlington Ambulance, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a storage building that was on fire at the above location. The building was a complete loss along with electrical equipment, a skid loader, back hoe/trencher, 4 wheeler, cable plows, and misc. tools. The value of the barn and items is unknown at this time. The cause of the fire is also unknown at this time. The fire is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Location: 20165 468th Ave. (Bruce, SD)

On the above date and time the Bruce Fire Dept., Brookings Fire Dept., Estelline Fire Dept., Estelline Ambulance, Brookings Ambulance, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a Dairy Barn that was on fire at the above location. It was found that a truck used to clean bunkers in the Dairy Barn had caught on fire due to an unknown mechanical issue while a worker was operating it. It was found that the fire spread to some of the bunks in the barn. The fire departments were able to contain the fire and no one or livestock were injured. The estimated damage the building was $100,000.00. The Mensch 3410 Vacuum Truck was a total loss and valued at $189,000.00.

Aggravated Assault

Location: 48612 212th St. (Rural Elkton, SD).

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Brookings Emergency room as a 23 year old male was transported there by private party that had been slashed with a knife. It was found that an altercation had taken place at the above address where the 23 year old victim was slashed with a knife. The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office has identified 22 year old Arturo Mendez as a suspect and are looking for him in connection to the assault. He is described as a Hispanic male, slender, with short dark hair and dark eyes, his height and weight are unknown. He is possibly in a white Ford Explorer with Minnesota license plate of 6CB905. He has ties to Brookings and Moody counties. The victim was treated and released from the Brookings Hospital. The victim and suspect know each other and are coworkers at a rural dairy facility. Theft

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to the above location. It was found that sometime between the evening of Friday, 03/22/19 to Monday, 03/25/19 at 1200 someone came to a construction site and entered an unlocked warehouse and stole a Miller welding machine valued at $5,500.00. The welder had a custom metal rack built around it. Hit and Run

Location: 500 Blk of Jay St., Bruce, SD

On the above date and time the City of Bruce reported a vehicle had ran into the Bruce City Office sometime between Saturday, March 23rd, 2019 from 2130 to when it was noticed on Sunday, March 23rd, 2019 at 0920. It was found that the suspect vehicle was traveling east on Jay St. at a high rate of speed. The suspect vehicle attempted to turn north on 1st St. where the driver lost control of the vehicle and it went over the sidewalk and struck the building. A front bumper assembly and blue paint transfer was left at the scene. There was considerable damage to the building but the amount of damage is unknown at this time. Tristin was transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Brookings Ambulance with unknown injuries. He was later airlifted to Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD

On the above date and time the Elkton Ambulance, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 2 vehicle crash at the intersection of Elk St. and 5th Ave. in Elkton, SD. It was found that 30 year old Shannon Aguilar was traveling north on Elk St. in her 2015 Chevy Cruze. 15 year old Ashleigh Rodriguez was traveling west on 5th St. in a 2015 Chevy Spark and had stopped at the stop sign. She advised that due to the high snowbanks at the intersection she didn’t see the other vehicle and proceeded into the intersection, where the two vehicles collided. Shannon Aguilar was transported by ambulance to the Brookings Hospital with unknown injuries by the Elkton Ambulance. Ashleigh Rodriguez and the 15 year old passenger Isabella Rodriguez were transported to the Brookings Hospital in a private vehicle with unknown injuries. Ashleigh was issued a citation for a stop sign violation. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Hit and Run

Reported: Saturday, March 2nd, 2019
Location: 300 Blk of Buffalo St. in Elkton, SD

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a hit and run accident at the above location. It was found that a gray 2007 Chrysler Aspen was parked in front of the residence on the street and was struck on the driver’s side front fender, and front door, by an unknown vehicle. The unknown vehicle left red taillight fragments from its vehicle at the scene. The accident happened sometime between Friday, March 1st 2019 at 2130 to when it was noticed on Saturday, March 2nd, 2019 at 0950. The damage to the victim’s vehicle is estimated at $3,000.00. Stolen vehicle, DUI, narcotics arrest.

Reported: Wednesday, 02/27/19 @ 0655.
Location: I29 Southbound 1 north of Brookings.

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a non-injury accident on I29 southbound just north of Brookings. It was found that 20 year old Oliver Alexander Bracey from New Mexico was traveling southbound in a 2018 Hyundia Accent when he went into the west ditch and struck a snow bank that caused extensive damage to the front of the vehicle. The vehicle was found to be stolen out of New Mexico, and had substitute plates on the vehicle. There was also a small amount of methamphetamine, and marijuana found in the vehicle and on his person. Oliver was also found to be under the influence of narcotics as well. Oliver was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, ingesting a toxic substance, DUI 1st, possession of stolen property, no insurance, substitute plates, and expired license plates. He is currently being held at the Brookings County Detention Center on a $5,000 cash bond.

Theft

Reported: Wednesday, 02/27/19 at 0630
Location: 700 Blk E. 5th St. in Volga, SD

On the above date and time a Volga resident reported the theft of a small black rechargeable flashlight, a black Vortex 10x50 binoculars with a camo pattern harness that has a leather center on the back. They were stolen from his 2016 black Chevy pickup sometime on Tuesday, 02/26/19 from 1730 to when it was noticed this morning, Wednesday, 02/27/19 around 0615. The victim advised that he had been at the Sioux Valley School Parking lot, Caseys in Volga, and had parked the vehicle in his driveway. He advised that he thought he had locked the truck everywhere except when he was at Caseys. There was no forced entry into the truck. The value of the items that were stolen was $440.00. Location: Near 218th ST. and 474th Ave.

On the above date and time the Aurora Fire Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the above location for a barn fire. Aurora Fire Dept. requested assistance and several other Fire Departments within the county responded including ambulance services. The fire was eventually extinguished. The barn was a complete loss. A skidsteer, 2 lawn mowers, about 250 to 300 square bales of straw, and 63 head of sheep were also lost in the fire. The cause of the fire is unknown and is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Stolen Hand Gun

Reported: Sunday, 02/17/19 at 1825.
Location: Rural Bruce residence.

On the above date and time a rural Bruce resident reported the theft of a 9mm Smith and Wesson Model FD9 VE pistol that is black with a chrome slide. The pistol is valued at $250.00. The pistol was stolen from a locked shed at a rural Bruce residence. There was no sign of forced entry into the shed. The theft is believed to have occurred sometime between sometime in December of 2018 to when it was noticed on Saturday, 02/16/19. It was found that 29 year old Jordan Miller was traveling south on 466th Ave. and did not see the stop sign at the intersection of Hwy 14. The vehicle went through the intersection, where it vaulted and landed in the south ditch. The driver was transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Brookings Ambulance with unknown injuries. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

On the above date and time the Elkton Fire Dept., Elkton Ambulance, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a vehicle rollover at the above location. It was found that 20 year old Tristan Bergmann was traveling west on Hwy 14 and lost control of the vehicle due to the slippery road conditions. The vehicle entered the north ditch were it rolled. Tristan was transported to the Brookings Hospital with unknown injuries by the Elkton Ambulance. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Fire

Reported: Sunday, 01/13/19 @ 1509
Location: Rural White, SD.

On the above date and time the White Fire Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a Bobcat Skid Steer that was on fire at a rural White residence. It was found that the owner had plugged the Skid Steer in to warm it up before using it. The owner advised that a short time later he noticed fire coming from the back of the Bobcat. Once the White Fire Dept. arrived they extinguished the fire. The Skid Steer received some $12,000.00 worth of damage. The fire is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.
