On the above date and time a rural Brookings Resident reported the theft of a boat trailer and aluminum Lund boat at the above location. The trailer was sold on an auction on Saturday, 06/27/20. The trailer was stolen sometime between Wednesday, 07/01/20 to Thursday, 07/02/20. The trailer and boat was valued at $185.00. Location: 8940 Westview RD (Brookings, SD)

On the above date and time a rural Brookings Resident reported the theft of a Stihl pressure washer model 2400 PSI with a yellow frame and a black engine. The pressure washer was stolen from the front porch of the residence. The theft occurred sometime between Sunday, 07/05/20 to Monday, 07/06/20 at 0245. The pressure washer is valued at $500.00. Theft/vandalism.

Reported: Wednesday, 07/01/20 @ 1040
Location: 100 Blk of Adams Ave. (Volga, SD).

On the above date and time a Volga resident reported damage to the hood of their Charbroil grill and two grates stolen from the grill. It was found that the suspect or suspects entered the back yard through a 4 foot tall chain link fence and onto the back deck where the grill is kept. The incident occurred sometime between Wednesday, 06/24/20 in the evening until it was noticed on Wednesday, 07/01/20. The cost to repair the grill and replace the grates is estimated at $90.00. Theft

Reported: Tuesday, 06/29/20 @ 1320
Location: Lake Poinsett State Park Boat Ramp

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a theft of a transducer off a boat for a Lowrance HDS 9 depth finder. The theft occurred on Sunday, 06/28/20 between the hours of 1930 to 2000 as the boat and trailer were briefly parked at the boat landing. When the owner of the boat returned he noticed that someone had cut the cable and removed the transducer. The cost of the transducer is $500.00. Video Lottery Burglary.

Reported: Friday, 06/26/20 @ 1553
Location: 101 Caspian Ave. (Valleymart Volga, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of video lottery machines broken into at the Valleymart located at 101 Caspian Ave. in Volga, SD. It was found that a suspect had broken into two video lottery machines and stole and undisclosed amount of cash. A suspect was later located at the Pump N Pack at Main Ave. S. and 12th St. S. in Brookings, SD. 40 year old Jeremy Novak was taken into custody by the South Dakota DCI and charged with Petty Theft. The agency’s involved were the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, South Dakota Division Of Criminal Investigation and the Brookings Police Dept.

Burglary

Reported: Wednesday, 06/17/20 @ 1015
Location: 21765 464th Ave. (Volga, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a vandalism and burglary located at the above location. It was found that a suspect or suspects had broken all of the windows out of an abandoned farm place that the owner had been in the process of remodeling. The suspect or suspects had also stolen several misc. items from inside of the home. The incident occurred sometime between Friday, 05/15/20 at 1400 to when it was reported on Wednesday, 06/17/20 at 1015. The cost to replace the windows is estimated at $5,500.00. Injury accident

Driver: Cary Wadsworth Age: 42

Vehicle: 2010 Chrysler Town and Country Damage: $4,000.00

On the above date and time the Aurora Fire Dept., Brookings Ambulance, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to an injury accident involving a van and a deer. It was found that the driver Cary Wadsworth was travelling eastbound on Hwy 14 when the deer entered the roadway from a shelterbelt on the south side of the road. The vehicle collided with the deer, causing extensive damage to the vehicle. 42 year old Cary Wadsworth was transported to the Brookings Hospital with unknown injuries. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Alcohol compliance checks

Date: Friday, 06/12/20
On Friday, 06/12/20 the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office completed compliance checks of local businesses in Brookings County. A total of 10 businesses were checked and 1 business failed the compliance check and sold alcohol to a 19 year old buyer. The business that failed was the Elkton Municipal Lounge. During the previous compliance check in June of 2019 two businesses made sales to the underage buyer.

Theft

Reported: Sunday, 06/14/20 @ 1715
Location: 600 Blk of Astrachan Ave. (Volga, SD)
On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of 5 to 8 foundation blocks that were stolen from a driveway of a Volga residence. The blocks are owned by Telkamp House Moving Inc. It was found that a neighbor saw a male subject approx.. 45 years of age with grey hair, driving a 1990 Ford Explorer orange in color with a lot of rust on the vehicle take the blocks. The theft occurred sometime between 0900 to 1000 hours on Sunday, 06/14/20. The value of the blocks is unknown at this time. Injury accident

Reported: Tuesday, 06/02/20
Driver: Kasey Menzel Age: 31
Lake Preston, SD
Vehicle: 2004 Ready Mix Cement Damage: Total loss.

On the above date and time the Sinai Fire Dept., Volga Fire Dept., Arlington Fire Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a Ready Mix Cement truck that had drove past the above intersection into a low area with water on both sides of the road. The gravel roadway became soft and the driver lost control of the vehicle where it entered the water and rolled. The driver was transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Arlington Ambulance with unknown injuries. The vehicle was a complete loss. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Reported: Monday, 06/01/20 @ 1920
Location: 207th St. and 456th Ave. (Arlington, SD)

On the above date and time the Arlington Fire Dept., Lake Preston Fire Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a tractor that was on fire near the above location. The owner of the fire advised that he smelt what he thought to be burning electrical wires and exited the tractor to see where the smell was coming from. When he getting back into the tractor he found the center counsel on fire. The tractor was a complete loss and was valued at $35,000.00.

On the above date and time a rural Elkton resident came into the Sheriff’s Office to report a theft. The items stolen from the shop at the above location are a set of 18v and 20v DeWalt tools with a bag, batteries and chargers. The items were stolen between 5/22/20 and 5/23/20. The value is estimated at $2,000.

Attempted break in.

On the above date and time an Aurora, SD resident reported an attempted break to a storage shed located on their property. Damage was noticed on the shed door where a suspect or suspects attempted to pry open the door. Entry to the shed was not gained but the door received an estimated $600.00 worth of damage. The attempted break in occurred sometime between Monday, 05/04/20 to Wednesday, 05/06/20. On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of the theft of construction tools from an unlocked enclosed trailer that was parked at the residence. The theft occurred sometime within the last two weeks. Two Hitachi 18v Cordless plastic strip framing nailers, two Hitachi air framing nailers, and one Hitachi coil siding nailer were stolen from the trailer. The total value of the nailers was estimated at $1,400.00. Location: 119 N. Lake Hendricks Dr. Hendricks, SD

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a theft of fishing equipment from a shed at the above location. The theft occurred sometime between 11/01/19 to when it was noticed on Friday 04/24/20. Stolen was four Scheels Tournament walleye rods, a graphite gloss lightning rod, evergreen color Scheels rods, two Baitcaster rods, five misc. rod reel combos, a hard case XL Plano tackle box with misc. tackle in it and a sleeve case with several Rapala plugs in it. The total estimated value of the stolen fishing equipment is $1,980.00. On the above date and time the Brookings Fire Dept. and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a fire in a field. The Brookings Fire Dept. extinguished the fire. It was found that the fire was believed to have started by faulty wiring of the heater for a water tank, which started grass and a small amount of hay on fire. The damage is estimated at $3,500.00. The fire is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Reported: Friday, 04/24/20 @ 1935
Location: 46659 205th St. Bruce, SD.

On the above date and time the Bruce Fire Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a
report of a tractor that was on fire. It was found that the owner of the tractor was pulling a planter planting
corn when a fire started under the engine compartment of the tractor. The Case International Harvester
315 Magnum Tractor with computer equipment, the Case 1250 24 row planter, 100 units of seed, and 120
gallons of diesel fuel was a complete loss. The value of those items was estimated at $328,240.00. The
fire is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Injury Accident

Location: 203rd St. near 464th Ave. (Bruce, SD).

Driver: Nicholas David Lein Age: 23

Vehicle: Minibike. Damage: None

On the above date and time Bruce First Responders, Brookings Ambulance, South Dakota Hwy Patrol, and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a minibike accident at the above location. It was found that 23 year old Nicholas David Lein was driving a minibike heading east on 203rd St. near 464th Ave. when he lost control of the minibike on the gravel road and tipped it over. He was taken to the Brookings Hospital by the Brookings Ambulance with unknown injuries. Alcohol was found to be a factor and Nicholas was arrested for DUI. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Reported: Sunday, 04/19/20 @ 1500
Location: 21877 471st Ave.

On the above date and time the Brookings Fire Dept. and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a fire at the above location. It was found that a controlled burn had gotten out of control and spread to a field. The owner was attempting to get into the field with his skid-steer and had stopped to open a gate and the skid-steer caught on fire as the owner had been working with hay the day prior and may have had some still in the skid-steer. The fire spread to some round hay bales and some farm equipment, which included some grain wagons, and rake. The skid-steer was a complete loss. The Brookings Fire Dept. extinguished the fire. The cost of the equipment and hay bales is unknown at this time. The fire is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

On the above date and time the Elkton Fire Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff's Office responded to a camper on fire at the above location. Upon arrival the camper a 2007 8x34 bumper hitch Jayco Camper was fully engulfed in flames. The owner had just plugged the camper in 20 minutes before it caught fire, and the cause of the fire is believed to be electrical in nature. The camper and all of its contents were a complete loss. The total loss is estimated at $12,000.00. The fire is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff's Office.

Vandalism

Location: 100 Blk of Edman Ave. (Volga, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff's Office responded to a vandalism where two tires on a 2002 Hyundai Accent were damaged with a knife. At about 0030 two suspects in a black colored 4 door car were seen near the victims vehicle, prior to the damage being noticed. The cost to replace the two tires is estimated at $200.00. The vandalism is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff's Office.

Vehicle: 2012 Dodge Ram Damage: Total loss.

On the above date and time the Brookings Fire Dept., Brookings Ambulance and Brookings County Sheriff's Office responded to a one vehicle rollover accident at the above location. It was found that 21 year old Jordan Lance Lilly was traveling southbound on I29 near mm129 when he lost control of the vehicle on the icy road conditions. The vehicle then entered the median and rolled. The driver of the vehicle was transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Brookings Ambulance with unknown injuries. The vehicle was a complete loss. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff's Office.
