On the above date, time and place, the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, Brookings Police Department and South Dakota State University Police were dispatched to the 400 block of 1st St. in Bruce, SD for a report of a suspect trying to enter a residence. While responding, the homeowner reported the subject had gained access to the homes attached garage and made entry into an unlocked vehicle. Upon arrival, Deputies discovered the subject had been able to start a vehicle located in the garage and attempted to back the vehicle through the closed garage door. The suspect later fled on foot and was believed to be in the 300 block of Madison Street. After a search of a second property, the suspect was located. The Bruce Frist Responders were requested and after assessment the suspect was transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Brookings Ambulance to be treated for frostbite related injuries. The suspect was identified as nineteen year old Jorgel Lopez from Bruce, SD.
Damage to the garage door is estimated to be $3500. Charges on complaint have been filed against Jorgel for 1st Degree Burglary, Criminal Entry of a Motor Vehicle, Criminal Trespass, DUI 1st, 1st Degree Vandalism, Reckless Driving, Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle and Underage Consumption.
The incident is still under investigation by the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.
