On the above date and time, deputies from the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Sioux Valley High School in Volga, SD. The incident was investigated and one student was taken into custody without further incident. The Sioux Valley School released the following statement regarding the incident:
After the events of the day and a debriefing with the staff after school, I believe it's important to share a few more details about today's incident.
A high school student brought a knife to school with the intent to instill fear in others. The student wielded the knife in a classroom where there two staff members present, but no students at the time. The staff members were able to remove themselves from the room unharmed. Law enforcement was contacted and took the student into custody. School administrators called a "shelter in place" to eliminate student traffic throughout the building until the safety of the students and staff could be ensured.
Thank you for your patience throughout the day. We understand your concern for your children and please know that the safety of our students and staff is always our top priority.
Sincerely,Laura K. Schuster, SuperintendentSioux Valley Schools
